This is to go with the seat belt post.
Back in the 20's races car's were just braking 100 mph and there were no seat belts or roll cages. Every year drivers were getting killed, so there was talk about adding seat belts and roll bars to the cars. The purest / old timers didn't want anything to do with them in any way, you were weak and shouldn't be driving a race car if you thought you should have them. After all it is a dangerous sport. A couple decapitated heads later, the rule was applied. With the "technology of today" (composite bats) the cars are running over 230 mph, and there isn't a driver out there that will get in a car without a seat belt or roll cage. I personally know race car drivers that are thankful the rule was adopted and are living today because of them.
As the girls get bigger, stronger, train harder and the technology of the equipment gets better, safety will and has to go with it.
If we were to go back to truly SOFT balls, aluminum or better yet wood bats you certainly wouldn't need a mask! We all know this will never happen! Simple fact is one day our kids will be required to use them, insurance companies will make sure they do.
FYI, my kid uses a mask. My choice!
