I agree a lot of watered down talent out there in 12U. As some have mentioned, a lot of league teams have some success with their all star team and the coach has the great idea of becoming a full fledge A-ball team. Then they get on the field with a true A-ball (please don't ask me to define) and get the living lights kicked out of them. But those true butt kickings are too few and far between because they are playing in tournaments where 90 percent of the competition is watered-down and so they have some success and they convince parents, hey, we are not so bad after all. Of course the parents are clueless because they don't know any better. So the cycle continues.
I also agree with some of you that it is way too early to tell until the games begin. A lot of those tooting the 98 TPS and 98 Sting horns have to realize, it is a different ball game. And those of you who are now second year teams can attest to that. 35 to 40 feet and 11 to 12 inch does make a difference. If TPS did not get stronger on defense, they better start because even the above average first year teams that had trouble hitting against them in 10U, WILL hit them now. I believe 98 Sting did get better on defense and and they were strong on defense to begin with, so I see them having some success against the weaker and below average 2nd year teams. Lady Astros 98 I believe lost some key players so they will probably struggle.
Second year teams that competed well against the second year teams in 12U this past spring I believe included teams like the Rattlers, Lady Astros 97, HV 97, and of course the Red Hots. All have made some player changes, but all either stayed the same or became stronger because of the changes. Pearland Panthers also had a good hitting club and if they picked up another strong pitcher in the offseason, they may be a solid team as well.
The reason it is going to be hard to rate the teams as well is because some of these kids are hitting their growth spurts. What may have been a good contact hitter in the spring, may now be a stud big bat. Or they may have picked up some speed making them better runners and fielders. Time will definitely tell.
