Re: Background Checks for Coaches?
To the softball community,
My name is Ron Withee, General Manager of American Liberty Softball Club. On Monday 7/13/2009 this issue was brought to my attention. When this individual first started helping out with our team I personally did a check on him on a site I use called familywatchdog.gov. Unknown to me was that his last name was spelled slightly different than his brother. When typed in at this particular site it brought up nothing. After learning that his last name was spelled a little different than his brother I was able to view his history. On Tuesday, 7/14/2009, I informed this individual and his brother that he would no longer be allowed to help with practices or games and would not be allowed at any of our team's events or functions. Simultaneously, I informed all of the teams parents what had just transpired and all were thankful that it had been handled swiftly. Currently, our metro is handling the deliberation process for any reprimand against the coach in question.
I thank you for allowing my comments.

The rest of the story:

Go to this website: https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/DPS_W ... hType=Name

Put in this name, last name first: Flanagan, Shaune Landell

If that isn't enough for you, go do a criminal background check and you will find that this scumbag has a rap sheet a mile long. DWI's, Narcotics Possession, Prison time, on Parole, Indecent Exposure with little boys, failure to register as a sex offender, he has tried to spell his name every which way(Shawn, Shaun, Shaune, Sean), it goes on and on.

The next question is how could his own brother knowingly subject this scumbag to kids, not just the ones that they "coached" but what about the kids that got "private lessons" or all of the kids that are at the ballparks? And why does his brother spell his last name , Flanigan VS Flanagan? Is he trying to hide something more?

This people should be banned from ASA, youth sports, etc.. People in the softball community, need to know when people like this are being exposed to our kids, and we need to all make a stand and put an end to this crap. It is more of an injustice by Heybucket to help protect these goons, instead of serving as another forum for public information.

Couldn't have said it better myself. HeyBucket moderators should be ashamed of themselves protecting these sick individuals.

Hey, while we are at this I say we get the name of every single parent that drinks in the parking lot at tournments and then drives their kid home. I also want to know what parent or coach has done drugs or was arrested while in High School, college, or later in life.

How many parents are at these tournaments that have done something to put our kids in danger? Afterall, it's only the coaches that are checked and not the parents or relatives. Oh my God, do you know how many parents or relatives show up that could be criminals? Drug dealers, rapists, thiefs, etc. I say we need to start fingerprinting everyone that walks through the gates at the tournaments!!!!

Don't think I'm taking any of this the wrong way but I can't help but wonder that if we are going to talk about 1 person then we need to consider the whole community out there and see what everyone has done o put our kids in danger.

I think the point you are missing is that I have control of my child. If I drink and drive with my child, I must deal with the consequences. (I'm not saying it is right!)

If there is someone that is coaching and has been arrested, more likely than not, they have restrictions to STAY AWAY from minors. They are breaking the rules of their probation. It is MY job as a parent to inform the authorities and alert anyone I feel is impacted by a preditor.

If someone has a record, it is public information. If there is a parent out there that has a record, especially fondling or indecent exposure with minors (9yr old, 12yr old) I guarantee you that people would be wanting to run them off. I would also think that if it was a parent or worse a coach, and someone else brought them along, they would be just as guilty as they pervert. Either way that is not anywhere in the neighborhood of getting in some trouble while in High School.

I could not agree more!

I understand that there are criminal elements everywhere in life, but as a parent, I chose to put my child in a position of trust with the HEAD coach of the team that they play on.

Did I personally perform a background check? NO.
Did I ask around and get INFORMED opinions? YES.
Did I do the same for the assistants coaches? YES.

At the end of the day, there is ONE person to blame for this! THE HEAD COACH! You can't blame Ron Withee or the ALS organization for this. There are no variances on the spelling of the LAST name on the sex offender web site for this person, only first name. It wouldn't find it for me with the LAST name spelled incorrectly. From what I have heard, the head coach is a good coach, his judgement sucks though. Mr. Withee did his due diligence from what I have seen.

The head coach knew FOR A FACT that this man was/is a pedophile! It is his brother! He knew beyond the shadow of a doubt what this man is, and he put him around these children anyway, and apparently didn't tell anyone about it.

My days with this team would be OVER! (and I would possibly be away from the ballparks a little longer depending on the sentence that I got for the assault and battery charge that would be pending :x :x :x :x :x :x ) In my opinion, that is UNFORGIVABLE! If it was another parent that was coaching, then he can always say that he didn't know. That deniability is gone in this case!

Just my opinion.
