Had a Stacey Nuveman injury last weekend at UTEP

What's on your mind?

by DonnieS » Mon Mar 03, 2014 3:41 pm

An athlete had to be taken to the hospital last weekend because she was playing softball without a facemask. A wild pitch hit her square in the face , right where the facemask should have been. Had brilliant people like Nuveman not made fun of athletes that wear them, maybe she would have been wearing one - and not be in the hospital.

Not sure why many college players do not wear masks on their batting helmets? Two years ago my DD's team had twoo that did not wear, last year one and this year they all do. Not sure of the upside of not wearing?

Let's see, how to approach this diplomatically? Stacey Nuveman is an idiot, a pompous, arrogant jerk who shouldn't be involved with softball.

Oh, let me see... I can tone it down. Really. Let's try this: Nuveman is a clown. She isn't competent enough to be an assistant coach. Don't like it Stacey??? Toughen up, bitch. How's that testosterone working for you, Stacey????

There will always be a subset of humanity who feel that taking any precautionary measures in sports is "candy ass", be it batting helmets or pitchers masks. Yet... baseball catchers wear cups. Why? Heck, why wear a glove? Why should anyone wear a glove or cup? Toughen up ! Football...why the pads and helmets, chumps? If you can't play ice hockey without masks, mouth guards or pads...you don't deserve to play the game. Goalies are obviously, the most wimpy. Toughen Up !!! Why have paintball masks? If you can't take a paintball in the eye you are a whining weasel. Why wear a helmet in a race car? And why the seat belts?

Stacey, as disgraceful as you are to San Diego State program, and softball in general, I can't imagine why anyone would want to play for you. Hopefully more girls will ignore you on all accounts and we can hear about fewer injuries because of it..

But, other than that, I have heard Stacey is an adequate cook. Barely.

Isn't that just her opinion? Everyone is entitled to one of those right? I am a big fan of batters wearing masks and I really have no problem with pitchers wearing a mask. Stacey is not a bad person and she is not a beatch she is great for the game and she does a great job on the field I think. She is nice as can be to talk to and she was a hell of a player. She is a tough women and she is just giving her opinion. I don't agree with her saying on TV that if you ware a mask your are a candy ass but maybe it just slipped out.

A good friend of mine had a DD at AZ that was tearing it up as a freshman. His DD took a ball to the grill that cracked her face pretty good. She never really was given the opportunity to get her starting position back after she recovered. Who knows what she would have done there if she would have had a mask on.

Take it easy on Nuveman her college home run record of 90 something home runs might be snatched up by a So Cal kid playing at Oklahoma :)

NumeroUno....unfortunately Nuveman is in a position to readily influence a significant number of players at all levels. Her comments on TV were completely out of line for anyone, particularly a softball coach. If she wants to be a talking head on TV, great!!!! However, the demonstrated bravado displayed reeks of an attitude that is not constructive and, as a talking head, she can, will and deserves any comment she earns, good or bad. As it stands, injuries incurred that could have likely been prevented will continue to have the "Nuveman" moniker attached.

All the more reason that she should be aware that a lot of kids, look up to people in her position, whether they should or not. It might occur to her that not every kid out there who wants to play college ball "like Stacee" - is as good an athlete as Stacee. And that's my opinion - worth what the reader paid for it.

I lost all respect for her when I read what she said about this - I have been around the game a bit, a lot less than some of you , and have seen injuries caused by not wearing a face mask. This last one at UTEP was particularly bloody and did not have to happen.

Girls, trust your common sense.

Stacey is merely stating out loud that which many coaches say. Easy to talk tough on an internet forum. I suspect you try to have the same conversation around a bunch of college coaches it may be you that finds themselves out of the norm.

Me personally, i see no reason not to wear one of the modern helmet face masks. The rip-it mask was very thin titanium wires and very open, yet fully protecting. One issue in college may be that they have equipment sponsorship, so they get the gear from a specific helmet maker. If they want a mask the get something that looks like this:

I suspect school and equipment manufacture make it hard to do something different. Anyway going to be hard to argue that these are not somewhat obtrusive.

This type of injury is pretty rare, and it does not seem you are putting your life at eminent risk batting without a facemask. Not really getting to equivocation to a car racing helmet, or a cup. Certainly pitching without a facemask does not seem to be flirting with eminent disaster.

Wasn't that long ago that NHL players were required to start wearing helmets. Now many of them voluntarily were face guards as well. Even MLB base coaches are now required to wear batting helmets. Looks like the message is slowly, painfully, sinking in. Hopefully, not too many more athletes, pro or otherwise, will need to be seriously injured before protection becomes the rule, and not the "candy-ass" exception. As long as I have any say, my DD will wear a mask when she pitches.

What the hell is that supposed to mean ? Tough was watching those parents leaving to go to follow the ambulance to the hospital.

Wow. And if college coaches , with all the time and money they spend trying to find good kids, would risk those kids looks and ability to keep playing to something as common as a wild pitch, or a bunt foul up into the face , I would want to know that the coach was as stupid as Nuveman.
