I don't really understand where the whole “lynch mob” mentality comes in. I don’t see anyone wanting to form a “lynch mob.” I thought this was a discussion board with the intent and purpose of discussing things that happen in the softball world?

People have seen the video. Some have judged no big deal, others have said they would not ever play for this coach and others have called for more drastic measures or sanctions on the team. It’s called a discussion. This is a discussion board. No?
Calling it a lynch mob seems somewhat inflammatory..

Blaming the video company for capturing the event, blaming the umpire for having a bad strike zone, blaming people for discussing and condemning these actions are all distractions.

Whatever is happening to this team as a result of their decisions is called consequences. That’s what happens in real life. Time to grow up.

PS @jtat...I saw your post as I was posting and your questions are much more interesting than the ones presented so far. Unfortunately with the sudden appearance of certain parties it's been derailed into a dick waving contest.

Right. I decide to offer my opinion, get attacked personally out of the blue, and it's my appearance that's the cause of the problem. Okay.

The lynch mob mentality is pervasive throughout the thread. Calls for lifetime bans, the withdrawal of scholarships, etc. To me that's making a mountain out of a mole-hill. That's my opinion, if that's alright with you.

So what "message" is being sent by physically attacking this man? Why does he have to use a 17 year old girl to send this "message?" He couldn't even go to this umpire's face and talk to him?

I already mentioned the numerous ways to handle this situation. This guy is not a rookie.

There is no way that this guy should be allowed to coach again. He's dangerous to these young ladies. He is teaching them that they can also send messages in life....slash a tire.....key a car.....graffiti a wall....take your pick.

There is no lynch mob. Nobody is stating that he should be arrested (I'm not saying he shouldn't be either). Many players look up to their coaches and learn from their behavior. Some of them may have been laughing after this incident...joking about it....and learning that their coach advocates these actions.....and he coaches one of the most successful teams in history. Nice message to send, eh?

Who exactly attacked you personally? If you're referring to my very first comment about "people like you" I was referring to those "people like you" who want to downplay this incident and all but sweep it under the carpet.

You're entitled to your opinion as am I, and it's quite obvious that we just need to agree to disagree and move on.

I have read many of your posts, Skarp and enjoyed your wit and agreed with most of your opinions, but not so in this case.

The pitchfork crew can claim there is no lynch mob if they like, but it is all in the thread.

People suggesting, and some actually following through with calling college coaches to get scholarships impacted. Actually calling the wrong coach about the wrong kid.

Giving out the coaches place of work, with the clear suggestion to call his employer and get him fired.

Saying it is the same as murder (Oj Simpson reference) assault (Rodney King reference). Claiming that it was assault, when for all practical purposes real officials would likely have passed on it as mutual as they did in the incident from last year.

Stating that the GA case shows how bad this was, until you realize that everyone moved forward from the GA case just fine.

Reality is that umpire is very well protected. Risk of injury was elevated so slight, far less than getting in his car and driving home after the game.

Then you wander why no one is going to listen to you.

If you truly believe that he conspired to cause injury to the umpire, then you should want him to be arrested. Why wouldn't you want him arrested?

I absolutely agree that the man should be censured...and he clearly is being censured. There were about a thousand more appropriate ways for him to convey his message to the umpire, including pulling his team from the field if he believed that the umpire was creating an unacceptable risk of injury to his pitcher (a legitimate point raised by jtat earlier in this thread). So by all means, call the guy out on it. But saying that he shouldn't be "allowed" to coach again is going to far, IMO.

Whether the coach is "dangerous to these young ladies" is for the parents of said young ladies to determine. I know you think the game is meaningless, particularly in relation to the life lessons and character issues in play--and I absolutely agree with you on that score--but the fact is that the game is not meaningless to the girls, parents, and coaches involved. They care intensely about it, and that intensity often leads to lapses of reason in the moment. That doesn't mean that everything (or even anything else) that the coach does is bad or harmful to the girls. Let the man learn his lesson from this and move on.

With this arguement alone there should never be any concussions in softball.
(helmets protect )
If a blue take a foul tip or shows any sign of pain when hit with a ball he must be a sissy.
If a catcher takes one to the head, have no fear, she is OK, if she shows pain, she has no place on field.
Really??
If hitting the blue intensionally is OK, then why doesn't it happen more often? Make a point at the beginning of every game.
PS Can those old SB trading pins be melted into muskat balls, :?

Right. I decide to offer my opinion, get attacked personally out of the blue, and it's my appearance that's the cause of the problem. Okay.

Is this what you're calling a personal attack?
fastpitchdad05
The Return of Skarp...highly overrated. And we waited so long for it to come out.

So, In your world, this qualifies a personal attack worthy of pages of “I know you are but what am I”.
But this is not a personal attack but is just a molehill not worthy of discussion? Move along nothing to see here.
