(How much is to much)When to switch to a new team??

What's on your mind?

by charsheen1 » Mon Dec 02, 2013 11:48 am

I could really use any input from all you travel ball parents out there :) ...
My daughter is 10 turning 11 in March and has been playing for the past year and a half. Her 1st travel ball team was an experience for us all. (With that being said we learned a lot, and knew what we wanted in a travel ball team for the year 2013-2014.) When we moved on we went with a team that said they were 'strictly' 03, but to our "surprise" this was not so, infact they were going to be moving up to 12u in Jan 2014. So we left hoping again to find a "strictly" 03 team.

So now we are on our 3rd team.(since August) But there is just so much that is not being done. Which was promised to us from the begining, hence leading us to join this "great" team. If anything I am more upset with myself, because I am seeing her 1st team all over again. So shame on me right?
At the same time, i dont want to poor daughter to keep jumping teams, especially once shes made her lil friendships.
What I want from a team, is unity, great coaching & conditiong and just to play at least 3x a month. Is that to much to ask?? (Oh and who will play, ASA,PGF and or TCS)
SO DO I WAIT IT OUT< DO I MOVE ON??? PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED... :?

It's not always easy to find the right team let alone the perfect team for ur DD. What's perfect for you may be a nightmare for someone else. I know you want to find the right home but you also don't want to be known as a team jumper. I think you need to do more research before you make any more commitments. Ask a lot of question and if they don't want to give you straight answers move on. I am not sure where you are from but around here there are so many teams and so many opportunities for a player and her family.

What are the problems you are facing with these teams?

Last but not least don't forget she is only 10, playing a couple times a month is a good idea, she will have plenty of time when she gets older to be over played and burnt out :)

@Numer Uno,

The management of the team is all over. There is no enforcement, no ground rules. Friendlys are being assigned by parents. We are playing teams that we shouldnt be playing. (we are not seeing compitetion). We should be playing stronger teams, especailly being a 2nd year 10u team.
As a parent I pay to travel i pay to play those better teams. ;)

I am sure you can find a team that will have super discipline and teach their players to snap out of it. Your new team can face the tough 03 teams and be ready for a spring and summer full of travel.

Meanwhile my 10 year old loves softball, but prefers the social aspect of it and can cheer in the dugout with the best of them no matter what the score is

Char- Maybe a good time to start your own team. Then you can create the exact environment you want. That should save you the time/hassle of trying to work with these other nimrods to create what a select softball team should be.

What sarcasm? That is how all 10U TB teams are formed...

Just trying to shorten Charlies typical trajectory. Normally this takes about 4 years to play out.

The typical timeline:
1) Age 9-12. Run through 3 or so nimrod run teams a year.
2) Age 13. Start own team, struggle for year while all the other nimrod parents continuously complain cause they don't get it.
3) Age 14 DD decides it is more fun to hang with boys at the mall.

That takes too long. Why take 5 years that which can be done in 2?

Take her back to rec ball for this coming year and the next. She has no business playing this number of games at her age. She can play all-stars and sample some other sports in the off seasons. You can use that time to scout travel teams. Playing travel at 10U only increases the chances of longterm overuse injuries and/or early burnout.
