When is the dark time for High School/ Travel softball?

by Grades & Softball » Thu Nov 29, 2012 5:12 pm

When is the dark time in LA/Orange county? February 25th - May ## or so?
I guess San Diego has some of its own restrictions.
Is it different for varsity players or JV or Frosh/soph players?

Can you still practice with your travel team on Sundays?

Thanks.

I don't like to think about when it is. It is a long dark sad time for softball in San Diego. High school coaches take over. We are not allowed to practice with real coaches and the girls decline into a lesser version of their former travel team selves.

I wish that high school softball in San diego was a Fall sport so that it didn't hurt our girls the way it does going into summer ball.

Feb 23rd is the date for the first contest for HS. Kids are free whenever their team is done for the season.

Only outside of San Diego, correct?

Right, because during high school, the girls need to not only practice/play 5 days a week, but also practice with their awesome travel ball coaches on the weekends too...

Maybe someone should have reigned in Tom Dodd a few years ago, since he is the reason you have that rule.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

Right! It's CIF's job to manage high school sports. Not tell athletes what they can and can't do outside of high school. That is a parent/child decision. If it's not your lifestyle, don't do it. If it is, the athlete and parets are willing and the grades and health are up, which is the case for us, then you should have the ability to make that decision for yourselves.

I could live more comfortably with the rule if high school softball moved to the fall.

Reign in Tom Dodd! LOL! Yep, CIF reigned in Tom Dodd all right; him, the 14 girls on his team AND everybody else in San Diego. Ridiculous. And if they are going to make that rule, it needs to be state wide. We have to come out of high school ball and compete with the OC girls after three months in La La Land.

How old are your kids?
First, I get what you are saying.
Personally, going through the process a 2nd time, and now with my youngest kid in her last year of travel/high school softball, my opinion has changed some.
I have gone from thinking she needs to fill every waking moment with softball to realizing that she also needs some down time.
Especially during the high school season, when they are either practicing or playing sometimes 5 days a week with some Saturday tournaments mixed in. And pitching, fielding, hitting lessons somewhere in the mix as well.
JMHO...

Good luck with that. He's the new coach for Mira Mesa HS.
