Div II competition

by V'sDad » Wed Feb 08, 2012 11:53 am

If anyone in the San Diego area would like to see some good Div II competition, UCSD and Chico State are playing at UCSD this Friday and Saturday. Both teams are pre-season nationally ranked and have great pitching.

Here are some of the top Div. II softball programs on the west coast:
UCSD. La Jolla
Cal State Chico
Sonoma State
Cal Baptist, (new to Div II)
Cal State San Bernardino
Cal State Monterey Bay
Humboldt State
Hawaii Pacific
Western Washinton
Dixie State

I know that most every player wants to play for a D-1 school, but for those who decide not to go D-1, the competition level and collection of talent in the top 25 D-2 schools is very strong.

There is a "good fit" foe every travel player out there!

My suggestion is when your kid decides on what she wants to major in and then goes on her visits - ask this question, "I want to major in xxx, will that be a problem here." And then ask the kids on the team if they had to change their majors because of softball. Then decide on where you want to go to school, and remember what college is for. Softball is one of the most enjoyable things my kids and I got to do together, and its great if it helps you accomplish your education goals. But dont give up a major lifetime goal for one that is not.

Thanks Donnie,
That is where I was going with this. A good education, time for studies, and competitive ball. My daughter was concerned that D-2 was not going to be a very high level of competition. With the teams I mentioned above that was not the case.

Donnie that is great advice.

I have learned a lot about recruiting and picking the right school for a player the last few months. There is a TB coach in So Cal that's doing things no one else is doing. He might have more knowledge about getting kids at the right school than anyone else I have talked to. He probably doesn't want me to mention his name so I won't.
To many TB teams send a kid to a school before they really know if that is the best fit for that kid.

It's a process of elimination. Location, weather, size of school, your major, D-1 D-11 etc.

Most teams just want a kid signing with a d1 programs so they can put it on their site. A d2 signing is seen as something less and is not what they want.

We sent a kid to a JC last year that otherwise would hve struggled to do the local JC. The JC out of state is paying for EVERYTHING for her and she is having a ball. More importantly, IMO, she is away from home and learning how to do things on her own, which is something she really needed.
