Coaches Need to Teach More than X's and O's

by NumeroUno » Tue Nov 22, 2011 6:38 pm

sometimes coaches are so green they just don't get it yet, if they ever sat back and thought about the way the other teams players probably felt maybe they would think twice about ever doing that again.

This is just another time when it is about the Coach and his Ego and not the girls he is coaching. Great Job Coach you just crushed and humiliated a team of 12 or 13 year olds. You must be an awesome coach. That is what it is all about right? How great a coach you are. Too bad it isn't about the girls on your team. You do have some very talented girls too bad that isn't what is being talked about....but it is all about the coach now isn't it.

Unfortunately this situation has little to do about being "green", and all about integrity. You can't teach integrity, you either have it or you don't. THis is a great story though about people who shouldn't coach and will eventually be weeded out from the crowd. Parents around him will see what this guy is about, that he lacks integrity. Like minded people will stay with him and people worth their salt will walk away. He will eventually be left alone or with a bunch of souless people who are doomed to failure in softball and life!!!

To the comments above...my dd has played against said team and we've enjoyed some good battles. I think what you had here was a coach of 99s going up against a team of 97 and 98s and he was trying to prove that his team is a top team that can beat up on 97s and 98s.

My dds team does not do this, they have played lesser opponents, stepped off bases, stepped on plates to manufacturer outs for the other team. We've had other parents come to us and thank us for the way we handled ourselves on the field when the other team was outmatched or out of gas.

On the flip side of this, the team they were playing against has been a "select" team for years now...at what point does the coach of the other team say, "am I really helping my team?"...I know I know this may sound sinister...but sometimes teams should disperse and let their top players join other teams that are top teams...I've heard the argument that everyone should be allowed to play select ball, but not everyone should be allowed to coach select ball IMO.

I hate the fact that a bunch of 14 yr old kids had to take a but woopin by some 12 year old kids...but also think that if I was on the other team I would be asking myself...is this where I want my kid to play at and why are we here?

PBJ does bring up some good points and at the end of the day you do play to win but there is a point where you go from "winning with class" to plain bad sportsmanship. If the game went down like the original poster says it did, I would fault the coach of the winning team for crossing the line.

It is unfortunate though that this issue coupled with last week's events in Garland with the 14U coach swearing at this kids, it appears the team with the most hallowed of names (by Texas standards) has really lowered their standards to the point where any schmo can put a team together and tarnish what up until a few years ago was a world-class organization.

Several years ago I watched a game with a similar situation as far as the score. The coach of the dominating team was bunting in order to try to get outs and the opposition was so bad they could not get outs. He even had his entire team switching to the other side of the plate.
Maybe this guy just really is a classless ahole, i really dont know. Its looks like the team your talking about was playing up though. Could it not be that they were just trying to work on things? If that is the case what is the right answer there. Obviously if they are playing up its just practice to them anyway. So should they give up on practice to spare the feelings of some other kids? How do we know the coach didnt talk to them about sportmanship afterwards? Look, you all seem to know this guy better than i do but it seems unfair that we judge a coach simply based off the score. Anyway you said you walked up when the score was 25-0. Looks like the score ended that way so apparently you didnt see too much run manufacturing. Sounds more like sour grapes to me.

I'm not a big fan of either organization, but are you seriously unaware that they are unaffiliated or are you just some Adkins crony continuing the mass confusion of the general public?

Lets not get into the differences between Glory Adkins and Glory Shelton...that horse has been beaten to death. the only people who don't know the difference are the Glory Adkins parents...nuff said.
True issue is the integrity of the coach who ran up the score..25-0 is no fun to anyone, but I highly doubt DM was running up the score to crush a kids will to play. DM is a good coach and has done good things for years in the softball community...this is just a case of someone being on the wrong end having an ip address and a keyboard...

PBJ if it were any other coach I would maybe believe you. You did make some good points but here it is 25-0 tell me what kind of practice are they getting anyways.
one of my oldest daughters teams had been on the wrong end of this and we were playing a team and they jumped of the bags to help us out. Then DD's same team grew and they were having to jump off bags to give outs.

You win with Class that was the lesson that needed to be taught that day not bunting practice or baserunning practice. Which by the way we all know that is how DM plays is small ball. So he wasn't bunting to give them outs.

I fully understand the differences within the overall name and who clings on to who, etc... My overall point, and it was obviously missed, is that if you take on the name of an organization, whether you are affiliated or not, you will always be lumped in with the name that you represent and should understand that. It used to mean something to have the word "Glory" on your jersey but now, there's so many, both good and not so good teams, that whether or not it's Adkins/Shelton/whoever, many people look at them the same.
