Tryout Fees?

Fact or fiction? Rumors of California teams charging a fee to try out are popping up again, but I've never heard of any doing it. The whopper is elite Gold teams charging $500 to try out.

Does anyone know of teams charging a fee? If so, who and how much?

Like I said, I haven't heard of any teams doing it. People back east seem to think it is common out here and I'm trying to find out if there is any truth to it.

I do not know of any teams charging a few to tryout

I also heard that rumor from an out of state team when we were in Indiana. They heard that So Cal teams charge up to $1000 to try out. I thought that was hilarious.

You are talking about paying just to go to the tryout? $500 to go tryout for 3 hours, wow that is a great idea

Just got back from IN. TN Elite was staying in the same hotel as us. They told me there was a lady in TN charging 1500.00 for tryouts...lol...

TN Elite said they charge 300.00 per year all inclusive...NO DUES! Nada!

I'm pretty sure the other lady was on crack....or something...

There is a persistent rumor in our area that teams in SoCal charge for tryouts. It is largely held as a given. Usually it is stated that the Corona Angles, OC BB, Firecrackers, and other major organizations have so many kids show up at their tryouts that they charge $500. Another part of this myth indicates that it originally started at $50 to make sure that candidates were serious, but quickly became a nice fund raiser.

It is generally believed that these organizations get on the order of 500 families to pay the $500 for tryouts. Of course anyone with a calculator knows that is $250,000.

It is usually stated after we 2 and Q at Nationals and at the same time we are whining about not being able to compete with the SoCal teams because of a standard long laundry list of bad excuses (population, weather, they have funded tryouts).

Most of those tryouts are by invite only. Especially at the Gold level.

The only big open tryout is for Doug's OC Batbuster 16U team. There are usually somewhere around 90 kids and 4 or 5 other travel ball coaches there on three fields at the middle school in Garden Grove where he practices.

If one coach had the greed to try to charge kids if they get a scholorship ( http://www.heybucket.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2545&p=21689 ), why not charge for tryouts? Great way to pay for Geritol and knee replacement(s).
