The "outfield is bad" mentality is a major problem with parents. Parents think their DD ought to be in the infield the majority of the time and, therefore, few become the exceptional outfielders that are needed to have a great 12U and older team.
My DD always played infield at the lower levels, but I personally taught her how to play outfield correctly because there is always a bigger fish and I felt it would give her more options. Cry- baby parents need to let their kids grow up and quit trying to relive their childhood through their child. There are 9 positions for a reason. If the DD has a goal of playing college ball the more they can do successfully at mulitple positions the better. My DD now primarily plays infield because the coach thinks she is best at that position, but she also plays outfield some and I have no issue with this as it will only help her become a more well-rounded player.
Parents need to get over themselves, and coaches at the 6U and 8U levels need to do a lot more rotation of players to develop the players for when it really counts. Many coaches at the 6U and 8U levels are way to concerned with their coaching records and do not properly train players. Hence, the outfield becomes punishment instead of something the DD's need to learn how to play effectively.
