The Pollyanna Nationals ! aka, "heck with reality"

What's on your mind?

by fasterpitch92701 » Tue Aug 11, 2009 1:35 pm

Pretend we are all Pollyanna-types and for the good of mom, John Wayne, the flag, apple pie, quality bar-b-que, a cold beer sitting next to the pool at the hotel after the 4th game of the day… and our DD's softball career and future is upon us…. Just pretend we had the ability to benevolently wave the magic bat (legal, of course) of sanity over the powers that be and define clear standards for a national tournament… the national tournament… ok, THE National Tournament, be it 18G, 16U, whatever. Call it what you want. What would be your wishes, oh grand oracles of all knowledge worth attaining? My list would start with;

- No college athletes (softball college athletes, rugby, golf, swimming, track ok…)
- No adds to the team once regionals have started. Frozen roster. Yes… many of you will disagree. However, I happen to believe that it's a t-e-a-m that goes to nationals and that team… should play with what got them there. I said "Pollyanna" up front.
- Locale must be able to support a tournament with sufficient hotels. The organizers must be able to provide reserved, available rooms at the non-tournament prevailing rate, not the +40-60% jack-up-the-price game. Don't like it? Don't host it.
- The fields should be at 1 (one) location.
- There should be sufficient field support for maintenance throughout play.
- Tourney duration; 5 days. None of this play 1 game a day (or less) for the first 3 days to keep the participants floating the local economy in currency. If you want practice games, go early. If you a vacation, stay late.
- If there is a rain/lightening delay, have the ability to make a decision and then be able to convey it.
- There needs to be a "real" airport within a reasonable distance.
- Expect, plan, schedule 3 games a day or more starting with day 1. Maybe 4 a day.
- Hire competent blues, pay and treat them well.
- Severely limit or eliminate filler teams.
- Qualified teams should be there based on talent, not region, politics, promotion, perceived reputation, etc. If the best 64 or 128 teams in the country are from… northern Idaho, so be it. If they are "the best" then let "the best" compete.

I have cast gasoline upon the waters of opinion. Who's got a match? :o :D :)

You did a nice job summarizing what many have complained about regarding ASA on this board and others. One game a day in backwater towns was probably the biggest one I heard from folks coming back. Agree with most of your points, but don't think the math works for 3 games per day in 1 location.

Say, to make the math easy, we have 100 teams, all wanting to play 3 games per day, 300 games / 2 teams per game = 150 games. If games start at 8, 10, 12, 2, 4 & 6, that is 6 games per field per day. 150 / 6 = 25 fields required. If there is any town with a 25 field complex, I'm moving there right now. You might can squeeze one more in with lighted fields or 1:45 between, but as a coach, I hate being rushed on back-to backs.

Maybe the answer is 64 teams at 2 games per day, send to rest to the respective 'regional' Nationals, and make those have at least some criteria for qualifying.

The field situation gets dicey and is probably the one item that can't be realistically changed. Having fields reasonable close together is probably the best that can be expected but even that has been taken to extremes; 4 sets of fields with 4 fields each works, but it's real messy. There ARE locales that support 8-10 fields. If the number of teams was limited to 64 as you suggested, things change significantly. And if it is for, in theory, a National WhizBang End-All Tournament From Hell, having 164 teams is a revenue centric situation more than anything else. Even 96 teams might be manageable, but 164?

What would make real sense is to have a qualifying procedure to get to Regionals, top regionals out at 64 teams, run regionals last week of July as a 4 day tournament at an 8 field complex and then take top teams from each Regional to a National tournament after one week off.

Basically adopt the NCAA system.

Obviously, this is contrary to OP's "Qualified teams should be there based on talent, not region, politics, promotion, perceived reputation, etc. If the best 64 or 128 teams in the country are from… northern Idaho, so be it. If they are "the best" then let "the best" compete."

Are you talking about the Regional Qualifiers held by each region or the 4 regional Nationals? How many teams would advance to the USA/ASA National?

(deleted "Only one week off between the tournaments is totally unrealistic." since the premise of this topic is "heck with reality".)

Here are a few more items for the list - remember this is the Pollyanna Nationals:
- Ample parking close to the fields with easy access in/out.
- Practice diamonds for teams to warm up.
- Ample clean restrooms near all the fields.
- Snackbars near all fields with great food, fast service and low prices.

Or umpires that think everyone is there to see them.
