Pitching change ?

Okay ... it has come up again ... my fellow Coach says he was once again told that this non-rule was enforced in a game by another Coach ... The ball is laying in the circle as teams are changing sides ... on the way past the circle the shortstop stops and picks up the ball and hands it to the hurler ... OC argues and wins that this act constitutes a pitching change ... The best I can figure this was, or is some local league rule somewhere, or just an old tale ... but he had heard about this last year as well and once more asked me if I was certain .... any ideas?

Sounds like bs (some local league rule somewhere, or just an old tale) to me. I don't see how it could be. No reported substitue or coach advising of change. At that point the ball isn't even live, not that that makes a difference. If you follow that logic, then when the catcher throws down to 2b, woundn't f6 or f4 (whoever fields the throw) be a pitching change? Just my .02.

Any ideas? Yeah, find another coach. While you are at it, you'll need someone to umpire the games since the putz who agreed with this certainly isn't qualified to umpire.

How’s this? Wait for Brain Surgeon OC to get in 3B coaches box. The second time he says anything to one of his players in the batter box, go argue to the umpire he has excessive offensive conferences and should be ejected.

Had this happen to my dd's 10U travel team. SS and 3B would try to beat each other out so they could be the one to give the ball to the pitcher (at least they would hustle out that way). OC talks to umpire. Umpire tells our coach that the first one to pick up the ball next inning has to pitch. Don't know if the OC came straight from rec or what, but that was a new one on the rest of us. I still can't believe the umpire was going to try and enforce it.

Well ... any Coach who has been around has seen many bizarre explainations and any Blue that has been around has heard many bizarre pleas ... my fellow Coach was not agreeing with what he heard but rather asking me since I have decided to look at this game from the 'other' side if there was anything that could possibly justify the call ... As far as my comment 'any ideas' ? ... I was sort of fishing for someone who may remember a Dixie, LL ...Tball rule that this Blue was confusing his ruling with and why it would even be a rule anywhere ... but maybe he was just a dip-sh*t ...

This weekend in our associations, our ss picked up tha ball on her way out, kicked and dealt overhand to the catcher. (I have seen her do this at least once before) A parent from another team started grumbling to his dd how this was illegal. Wade, a little help here...?

Don't think i've ever heard this in softball, but several years back calling Little League baseball games it was a rule that we only enforced in the allstar tournaments and regional tournaments.

Local rule?

Here's a thought. No one is really a pitcher is a particular inning until they have actually started a pitch per 6.2/Fastpitch "the pitch starts when one hand is taken off the ball after the hands have been placed together." (ASA 2006. Sorry did not have 2009 available).
