Defense on orange bag at 1B

ASA Rules

Runner on first base. Batter lines out to F5, runner had gone halfway :) and is returning to 1B but throw makes it to F3 standing with one foot on orange bag.

Seems to me that this is an out because both offense and defense can use orange bag on a tag up situation, but I'm not positive I'm reading 8-2-M-7 ASA rule correctly.

Umpire called out, seemed correct to me, but OC went nuts.

I thought they were out unless the throw or the BR draws F3 to orange bag.

Wade
Are you saying that when a play is being made on a BR it is treated as two seprate bags, but when the play is made on R1 both bags are treated as one big bag? Not being nearly as well versed in the rules as you I would have thought that the play on R1 only the white part of the base was in play.

correct - all that section essentially boils down to

BR - 2 bags.
a runner- 1 big bag.

that change was made a few years back.

I think that is the problem I ran into. I was actively coaching when the change was made and a point of emphasis was done that year about the change, for people who just started, or came back after a hiatus, it's hard to re-wire your brain to rule changes. We have a pitcher that wears a first baseman's mitt on the mound (because when she doesn't pitch she plays first base) and at least 3 times a year someone complains to the umpire about it despite it being a point of emphasis a few years ago "any mitt/glove any position"

I think ASA and NFHS do a pretty good job of posting rule changes for the current year, it would be nice if they made it easy to look at an archive of past year changes.
