Scoring Question. Fielder's Choice or Base Hit?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

Ok, runner's at 1st and 2nd. 1 out. Batter hits shallow fly ball to right centerfield. Outfielder's are deep, so it easily drops for a hit. But, runner at 1st misreads it, and ends up getting forced at 2B. Just curious. Base hit or fielder's choice?

FC. Bonehead running mistakes by your teammates decrease your batting average. Sorry.

No. It's a base hit.

In order for an FC there needs to be a reasonable assumption that there was a play on the batter-runner.

You stated that was not the case. "Outfielder's are deep, so it easily drops for a hit."

Survey says....X

From the NFCA scoring guide:
Credit a fielder's choice
1. when a ball is put in play where a preceding runner is forced out on the hit, or
would have been forced out had no error occurred,
3. when a ball is put in play where a play is made on any lead runner and an out
occurs
, or an out would have occurred had no error taken place, or the runner is
safe, but the batter would have been out had the initial play been made at first,

The only time time the BR gets credit is if no out is made.

You are leaving out the key element: "but the batter would have been out had the initial play been made at first".

The term itself....Fielders "Choice", requires that the option to put the batter out exists.

Take that option away, and it is no longer a choice. The fielder is making the only available play after the hit.

Here's a related question:

Runner on 1st, batter hits grounder to SS, SS throws to second for the force, 2nd throws to 1st for the DP, but the batter beats the throw and is called safe. Is it still a FC or is it a hit because a play was attempted on the batter?

I agree with Coach 11.

Would the batter have been out if the attempt was made at 1B? I say fielders choice.

I totally disagree. If you have a slow runner at 1B and a very fast slapper at bat, a perfectly placed slap to SS would allow the play to be made for an out at 2B while there would have been no chance to get the batter at 1B. By your definition, this is a hit. Not by the rules most of us play by. The answer to the original post is FC without a question.

FC....the play at 1st base was available...SS chose to attempt DP.
