Bat dropped on ball

Rule question? Get it answered here.

This probably has been discussed, but I can't find it. Batter bunts ball in front of plate. The batter, ball and bat are all still in the batters box, when the batter drops the bat on the ball. What is the correct call?

Depends on location of the ball when it was hit by the bat. You say the ball was bunted "in front of the plate" and then mention all elements were still in the BB. That can be somewhat confusing, but the BB is irrelevant to anything in the situation offered.

So, if the ball was in fair territory when hit by the bat, it is a fair ball. Otherwise, nothing, but a foul ball.

If the bat hits the ball when in fair territoy, the batter is out. (Interference) Any runners would return to their base.

I am thinking more than a few people will not quite get the distinction between bat hits ball and ball hits bat. :?

Absolutely. I was referring to the status of the ball.
