The Umpire Corner

Agressive play? Or agressive baserunning?

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by Iluvblue » Mon Mar 30, 2009 9:12 am

Runner at third gets off on the pitch, first step in foul territory. Ball is caught by catcher, and now R3 does a teardrop curl when returning to third base. This motion takes her about a foot into fair territory as she is returning to third. The third baseman is just standing there in the way of the runner, and there is some bumping happening as she is returning.

The runner is not running the defender over. Now the coach has yelled to his third baseman to stand her ground. And now the runner must run around the 3rd baseman. The opposing coach told me blue said they could do this. So when I questioned the umpire he brought up something about an aggressive act, or aggressive base running on the runner. he never did say she would be out. he didnt really go any further.

My take on this is that if that defensive player does not have the ball, my runner makes her own baseline. So the defender must move, not the other way around. So I asked the umpire if the catcher threw down, and my runner collided with the third baseman who is standing there without the ball, wouldnt that be a pretty easy obstruction. And he was a little vague and said it might be, but it might not be.

Now this was no argument, it was a discussion between innings. I have know this blue for at least 10 years. But I asked him if he would show me in the book after the game where this "Agressive Act," is discussed, he said he wouldnt.

So I am just trying to make sure I get this and I cant seem to find it in the book. Now I do understand that the offensive player cant just lower a shoulder and knock the snot out of the third baseman, that would be unsportsmanlike, or some other rule that could lead to an ejection.

So someone help me out and point me in the right direction of the book to find was he was talking about.

Thanks

If the fielder does not have possession of the ball, I would have obstruction.

Coaches say crazy things during the game. My thoughts on the umpire’s response are: Whenever there is contact between opposing players, the possibility of unsportsmanlike conduct could come into play.

When a game is over the umpires should leave the area, postgame is not an opportune time to have a rules clinic with a coach.

I can’t help you. I am not aware of the book you are referring to.

Im speaking ASA, sorry.

And I agree, with your opinion on contact between two players and possibly an unsportsmanlike.

I do not understand though when an umpire wants to bring up something like he did, while he wouldnt tell me where it is AFTER the game. Because quite honestly, i dont think it is in there. And if I am wrong, I want to make sure I understand what he is talking about.

Nobody with any help? I can not find what this umpire was talking about, with the exception of what was already stated about a possible unpsortsmanship.

Help please, as the umpire wouldnt/COULDNT show me in the book what he was talking about.

The runner does have the right to the bag so in most cases OBS is the call. In this case it apppears the runner did have an unobstructed route to the bag but may have intentionally decided to move into the fielder. Unsportsmanlike conduct or interference could be called.

I dont see how it gets goofy. im looking to get an answer to the umpire this weekend who was talking about an AGGRESSIVE MOVEMENT or something. He specifically used the word AGGRESSIVE, and I dont think that is anywhere in the book, of which he assured me it was.

So please show me where anyone in this thread pointed to the section of the rule book that discusses this AGGRESSIVENESS on the part of my runner.

I agree that in some cases an unsportsmanlike could be ruled, but that is not the wording this umpire used.

Speaking with this umpire away from the field/s for clairifacation on his "AGGRESSIVE MOVEMENT" statement would be a good approach. Please share if you get an answer.

I'm not aware of any aggressive movement wording in the ASA rules book regarding the situation described in your OP.

Perhaps the Blue 'mis-spoke' and meant to say 'malicious' ... or 'malicious contact' ...

I agree with both of you. That is why I asked him if he could show me after the game. I only see him at the fields, so that is my only chance to get a clarification on what he was talking about.

I think he likely meant the malicious contact you mention, and had he said that I would of understood what he was talking about.

If I find out I will pass it along.

Thanks for your help.
