It's cut day for most high school teams any news to share?

Both V and JV met at the school field today for a work day. I was impressed with the turn out of players and parents. The diamond looked great and the girls worked hard. Hope this is a good sign for the season to come!

Big Daddy...that is truly disheartning.! To have solid ball players lose interest for lack of a high school program....not much you can do if the kids/parents aren't that committed to softball. There are ALOT of sucky high school programs out there, if the kid really loves the game and wants the opportunity to play at the next level, they will stick with it. I think most of the kids that throw in the towel really just lack the commitment....and that starts with the parents..!...JMHO...JG..

As mentioned DD was very excited to find out she made varsity last week. As the only freshman on the squad, she is under the impression she'll spend some time on the bench....put her slapping/bunting talents to work as a pinch hitter, and likely see time as a curtosy runner for the pitcher.

Could make for an interesting season, as DD has always held a grudge against said sophomore.

My DD is in the same situation - a lefty slapper/bunter with speed. She's mentioned they might use her on varsity as runner or maybe OF (her position) because their CF graduated last year.

Grudges can be good things if it motivates her.

And thus the reason college coaches don't call many high school coaches about players they are recruiting with the exception of the select few high school coaches that I mentioned earlier.

I feel sorry for those of you that have to put up with the upper classmen play syndrome or the ole I don't allow freshmen to play varsity. A varsity team no matter the sport should have the best players in that particular school on it period. High School Softball Politics Suck!!!

Hey now there is t shirt idea and I bet I could even get them in your school colors.

Final post for me in this thread. Just wanted to update everyone on DD's position on the team.

Reminder, she's a freshman. She traveled with the varisty and three other freshman this past weekend. She did not play. Two of the freshmen started because the regular starters missed practices and sat according to the coach's rules. These four freshmen girls have been told that once the regular starters are back, they will play JV and suit up for varsity. They will practice with the JV for a few weeks, then practice exclusively with the varsity.

One thing that kind of bothers me is that one of these freshman has said that she didn't want to go out for softball but her parents made her, and that she wasn't going to play softball next year. She's a great all-around athlete and deserves to be on the team, but didn't she take a spot away from some girl who really wanted to make the team?

Mixed feelings on that.

Hate to see anyone shut out of the opportunity to play a sport they love.....but at the same time, that's what recreaction leagues are there for.

I would assume that a girl who REALLY wants to play the sport, but was left off of the varsity roster, will remain on JV in hopes of improving and trying out again next season.

I would hope so too. I know one girl who didn't make varsity or JV as a freshman last year, but tried again as a sophomore this year. She still didn't make either team, but you've got to admire her perserverance.

DDs team had their first scrimmage of the season today.......low 50s here in balmy NY.

Couldn't cut out of work early to see her, unfortunately.

DD started in LF....and moved to 3rd by the 4th inning. Only play she had was a run down in which they recorded the out.

Struggled at the plate going 0 fer 2 with 2 Ks.

Said the pitcher was nothing special....just made a few lousey pitch selections. The positive I take is that she recognized that.

Season on.
