Inappropriate Music

What's on your mind?

Ya but it was is self defense and he did not shoot no deputy.

I guess it doesn't seem so bad without every other word being the "N" word or the "F" word.

But, it WAS just as bad, thats my point. Really think back, and remember the songs we listened too growing up. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It's all the same. Because I let my Daughter choose her music, doesnt make me a bad parent. My Daughter plays Travel softball. She runs HS Cross Country. She plays HS softball. She is a str8 A student. She plays or practices 6 days a week. She works out, ON HER OWN, 4 days a week. And, thats just like alot of the Daughters that all of you have here on the Bucket. And, guess what, she likes the song "Soldier Boy". Just because you dont let your Daughter listen to certain songs around you, doesnt mean they dont listen to them. And, just because you are using censorship on your kids, doesnt mean they will grow up good. As a parent, just hope you have raised your Daughter to be strong enough, and smart enough not to let a SONG influence her decisions, cause I'll tell you this. IF a song can influence your kid to be bad, you are in for ALOT of trouble. Most everyone's kids on here are good kids. They play a great sport, and, dont have time to get in trouble. Be happy for that. So what if they like a song thats on the radio. Trust me, ITS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL.

We have a team that pretty regularly drags around those IceChest Radio deals.. never bugged me. I even kind of like it - adds atmosphere. Girls enjoy it and its one of those things.. that its a girls game.

Anyone who thinks they are shielding their kids from this music is only fooling fooling themselves.

They have the song memorized before you are aware of it and are bored with the song and moved on to another song by the time you figure out what the first one meant.

Never mind the disgusting lyrics, it's the non stop yelling and repetition. It gives me a headache, ....OMG now I sound like my mommy too!

Can't legislate good taste or common sense but can enforce manners and respect for others at the field. I say no place for it.

1) Ummm...yes, that is precisely what it means. My kids call me from other peoples' homes to see if they can watch PG rated films. They respect the boundaries that I have set. And they don't like ghetto crap, because a) I have explained precisely why it is crap, and b) they were raised listening to higher quality music, and thus didn't develop a taste for sewage.

2) Protecting young kids from negative influences at a young age won't guarantee they will grow up good, no. But it will certainly improve the odds. Just the fact that you care enough to place such limits is a fact not lost on your kids.

3) It's not whether a single song can influence your kid to be bad. It's whether they are continually immersed in excrement, constantly exposed to questionable moral and cultural influences and value systems. And the fact that you are permissive with respect to that is similarly a fact not lost on your kids. "I am your dad, and I approve of these messages."

4) Equating the Eagles to Soldia Boy is absurd. It's "just as bad?" You have got to be joking. How about 2 Live Crew then? Is it just as bad as 2 Live Crew? You okay with your kid singing and dancing to "Me so Horny?"

But the fact is I monitor lyrics in all music, regardless of genre, and change the channel when inappropriate songs come on. Moreover, my daughter changes channels when songs with questionable content come on, because a) she doesn't like them--they make her uncomfortable--and b) she wants to protect her younger siblings. I'm not sure if I can take full credit for that, but I'll take it either way.

I can vouch for this being a fact. Some days after getting the kids from school they pop on the radio, a song comes on I've never heard, and they know all the lyrics.

Except, as Spazsdad pointed out, they don't really know the lyrics, and even then, they don't know what they really mean. I had to look up the Superman thing, had never heard of it before, and know that my kids don't know what it means. And if they did it would gross them out.

Most of the lyrics in rap, and many in R&B and rock, are about sex, or getting sex, or wanting sex, etc. From Puff the Magic Dragon to Lucy in the Sky and Let's Get It On, etc etc, this has been around for a long time. And if songs like the OP stated weren't playing in such heavy rotation on Top 40 around the clock (as the most requested songs), then no one would write / sing them anymore.

Personally, I think Beyonce singing "If you want it then you gotta put a ring on it" is demeaning to women, and may well lead to a spate of ill-planned teenage weddings, followed by unplanned pregnancies, unwanted children in fatherless homes, and bulging welfare rolls.

Oh wait, that's been around forever too. Or at least since our parent's generation came of age.
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

So lyrics suggesting that one should wait until marriage before putting out is demeaning to women? That's definitely a creative argument.

Heres the lyrics to Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me". And they are very mellow to alot of other songs. I guess cause it doesnt say "Ho", its ok? And, Eric Clapton's "I Shot The Sheriff", isnt bad? And why is that? Cuase he "he didnt shoot the Deputy?" Or because he shot a sheriff? So, is that better than being a "Cop Killer?" What I'm saying here is, most of us grew up with the same kind of songs, and most of us turned out pretty good.

You know I never
I never seen you look so good
You never act the way you should
But I like it
And I know you like it too
The way that I want you
I gotta have you
Oh yes, I do
You know I never
I never ever stay out late
You know that I can hardly wait
Just to see you
And I know you cannot wait
Wait to see me too
I gotta touch you
Chorus:
Cause baby we’ll be
At the drive-in
In the old man’s Ford
behind the bushes
till I’m screamin’ for more
Down the basement
lock the cellar door
And baby
Talk dirty to me
You know I call you
I call you on the telephone
I’m only hoping that you’re home
So I can hear you
When you say those words to me
And whisper so softly
I gotta hear you
Chorus
C.C. pick up that guitar and talk to me
Solo, Chorus out
Go.....
Angels,
Raiders,
Lakers,
Trojans!
