Umps checking for rolled bats

MTR we did the same test and we could not feel anything different. When we used the paper on a brand new 2008 EASTON SCN8B SYNERGY that bat felt like it had lumps in it. Then we tested it on 2 different rolled bats and they felt the same. I was reading up on the process of a rolled bat. You can roll a bat and break it in partially or you can roll the heck out of it and break it in all the way. What I was told is the only real way to see if the bat has been rolled would be to use an ex ray machine. Maybe you might have to give the bat a MRI but that might takes months depending on your insurance. Like I said this is what I was told so I don't know how accurate this is.

Didn't say it worked on every bat that has been "rolled", but did say that if you feel the underlying ridges, the bat has been rolled, hence it is altered.

There is no guarantee that this will be detectable on every bat that is rolled, but there are no false positives.

I know nothing about this subject, so I checked Ebay. Probably 50% of the rolled bats that are listed are for slow pitch. I guess the 34 inch fastpitch bats could be used for slow pitch, too. But, not many people are using a 32 inch bat in men's slowpitch.

If a person were to buy a rolled bat for his DD, even the DD wouldn't know about it.

I see there is a "company" in Phoenix that rolls bats for $35.00. I think that shaving them is $125.00.

There were disclaimers on their advertising about not being responsible for injury, etc. Some said something about this is not illegal because the bats aren't being altered.

Where was the person that saw bats being rolled outside of a tournament? I thought that was fastpitch. Wasn't it?

I've also heard of this and I think umpires who do this are WAY overstepping their bounds, and there is no justification for doing so. Even if they know how to do it (which is definately questionable), it is not taught to umpires as a whole. It isnt taught at National Umpire School, Regional, or Metro Clinics. It isnt taught at any NFHS clinics. So basically some guy wanders around on his own doing this. This thread is a perfect example of why it should not be done.

Until such time that it passed on in umpire training as the technique we should be using, and it is put in the umpire manual or umpire training as a method of checking, some singular umpire of unknown repute and training asking for binder paper should be stopped by his UIC from doing this check.

There may or may not be false positives, rumor has it there are none.. who knows? Is that scientifically proven to be true? There are absolutely no false positives? WHo tested that? Where is the documentation to support that? What there is a questionable level of training provided to the tester (if any at all). If ASA or NFHS wants this done.. they know how to make that happen.

Until that time, this ump should stand down.

That whole statement above is my thinking to all changes. If you (ASA) give me the rules, I can follow.

It's opinions or generalizing that gets everyones panties wadded up. An umpires opinion with a sheet of paper and an ego can kiss my .... pinky. I just may not be able to catch that next rise ball. JK.
