Multi-school clinics/camps

Hi All,

I am curious to hear people's opinions regarding clinics that are typically run by travel organizations, but are open to a player from any team/organization/club, and that are attended by multiple schools/college coaches. Do you think they are just money grabs? Do kids ever get recruited out of these types of clinics? etc. etc. My DD attended one yesterday in NJ because coaches that she's been in contact with were in attendance. I am not sure these clinics/camps are the best route to go even though you can be seen by multiple schools. Any feedback is appreciated.

A few pieces of advice:

- Research the recruiting patterns of coaches at schools of interest to see how early they recruit classes and from which level of teams. Actual recruiting often starts 3-6 months ahead of when verbals are announced and coaches may identify potential recruits prior to that. Look to see which teams they were on at that time.

- If you receive an email invite to a camp expressing some vague knowledge/interest, validate it with some research. You should first consider if you're in their usual time frame (see above).
- - Some compose email lists from team profiles collected at showcases and use questionable tactics to get players to attend. Check with teammates to see if many received the same "we saw you at xxx" email. My DD received one from a school expressing interest in her and they'd already verbaled 2 other pitchers from her class.
- - Some camps get lists from other camps. If you've attended any camp(s) previously, you may have to contact the coaches to see if they're really interested.

- Coaches are more likely to take a good look at players that notified them they'll be there ahead of time and expressed interest in their program and school. Include the camp name in the email subject and everything inside (e.g. interest, profile info/link), even if you've sent the same info before.

Did she talk to the coaches of interest? That's very important in determining if the camps were/are just a money grab.

She did speak with the coaches and got some good feedback. It would have been good if should could have spent morte time speaking with them but there were nearly 80 other players trying to get the coaches ears as well.
