USA Softball has not limited themselves to ASA's chosen ones. The WNT is almost entirely college and pro players - the one exception invited to the upcoming selection camp played PGF, not ASA.
For last season's JWNT, they invited a number of non-ASA players to the selection camp and held a semi-open tryout where a significant number advanced to the selection camp and made the team. I think the number of players that made the team without playing college/PGF was very small.
So far, ASA's promotion of their events as the path to the national teams has been way overblown.
