Level bat or angle through the zone and at contact ?

What's on your mind?

by softballjunkie801 » Wed May 28, 2014 8:16 am

Just want to get some thoughts on this , we have a guy in our area that gives lessons he claims to have spent some time with the Texas Ranger org , I can get behind a lot of what he teaches he not a linier guy and works hard on Rotation the only area I struggle with is he promotes having a level bat at point of contact and to continuing to stay level all the way to extension and talks a lot about back spin on the ball . I can get behind a lot of what he teaches but I'm not sure I'm buying the level bat through the zone ..Thoughts ??

Use Google Images to search through pictures of hitters. If you see that elite hitters bring their bat through the zone level, then the coach is right. If they don't, then the coach is wrong.

It shouldn't take too long to get the correct answer.

Well every major league hitter tries to have a long path through the hitting area. So a flatter path in the hitting area sounds about right.

Of course without getting scientific on you. Use a shot of good 'ol Ted Williams, then fast forward to Miguel Cabrera, then use Lisa Fernandez then compare Sierra Romero.

Everyone of them has LONG ZONE before and after contact.

I love youtube/google....

I must be missing something. Wouldn't that depend on where the ball is????

Ball in the bottom of the zone would require you to drop the bat head down there. Hence it would be angled. Ball at the hands would be level.

Take a second and re-read his post. He's talking about the hitting zone. Just didn't articulate correctly. Some people that know a thing about hitting would say that starts before contact and continues through contact. Aka hitting zone, bat path or swing plane.

A guy like Candrea preaches this all day. So Softballjunkie your boy is definitely on to something.
