Tom Dodd rule backed by San Diego CIF

by fastpitchdad05 » Thu May 01, 2014 12:27 pm

The San Diego Union Tribune's John Maffei reported in today's paper (see link below) that CIF rule 600, known to many as the "Tom Dodd rule", is being backed by the the San Diego Section of CIF.

The state vote is Friday and it is believed that the rule will not be repealed.

I have always heard that for HS softball this rule was only enforced in San Diego, but I am seeing evidence that maybe this is not true.

Can anyone clarify this? Is SDCIF the only section that has to adhere to this rule for HS softball?

I may have found my own answer. Here's an excerpt from a March article by Maffei:

Two CIF Sections - San Diego and the Central Coast - have tougher rules than the state. Those sections not only don't allow athletes to play the same sport in the same season, those athletes can't even practice that sport at the club level during the high school season

It seems that the distinction is that you are allowed to gather, practice, etc. in all other sections with your club teams, but not allowed to play in games.

I also found thru my research that my next opinion has been expressed many times since the rule went into place...

It is absolutely absurd and completely unfair to the players and parents of these two sections that they should be subject to a different set of rules. The sections should be bound to the state's rule.

Thanks FP-Coach4...and I left out the injustice to people like you that lead and coach for a San Diego travel organization that is put on an uneven playing field since their counterparts to the north get to practice well ahead of them.

This really needs to change. Jerry Schniepp and John Labeta...are you listening??

One important correction...CIF rule 600 is not the "Tom Dodd rule". The added practice and contact restriction in San Diego which SDCIF added was apparently in response to Tom Dodd holding very long travel practices during the HS season.

Here's an excerpt I found on a different forum:

"CIF Southern Section (southern half of state except LA city and San Diego) used to have an 'association rule' that heavily regulated HS coaches of all sports from coaching their HS players on non-scholastic teams to keep them from forcing their HS players to play on their club/travel teams. Many travel coaches wouldn't coach HS because of it. They dropped it 6-7 years ago, about the time my son entered HS.

Statewide, HS coaches for all sports are not allowed to have contact with their players on Sundays during the HS season - this is to give the kids at least one day a week respite from their coach.

San Diego Section does not allow HS players to practice with their travel teams during HS season because Tom Dodd used to run marathon 8-hr practices.

Travel teams in most of the other sections tend to practice on Sundays during the HS season (they can't play games) because there is no conflict with the HS teams. If a travel coach is also a HS coach and has players from their HS team, they either schedule their travel practices on Saturdays or have assistant coaches run the practice on Sunday since they can't have contact with their HS players then."

Thanks goes out to Tom Dodd for the "gift" that keeps on giving.

Spaz, I never said I didn't agree with the rule (I do). But the rule should be the same for all sections to prevent the unfair advantage, don't you think?

I'm actually pleasantly surprised you didn't say that you think the Sunday marathon practices are okay. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall you on the offensive on another HB topic about all-day practices being okay and that you and your fellow coaching staff run them.

I will say that Spaz' comment has made me realize that it's not SDCIF that is at fault so much here. Yes, they are causing the unfair advantage by forcing the additional restrictions, but I believe the additional restrictions are a good thing overall because it puts the health of the players first.

It's State CIF that I feel needs to change it so that everyone should adhere to these rules, not just the two sections that are enforcing that rule on their own.

My apologies for mistakenly calling out Jerry Schniepp and John Labeta.
