Oh, I dunno...maybe an appreciable risk of injury, for starters. A bleeding brain? Surely you can't be serious. The ball hit him square in the face, and he didn't even flinch.

Ban the coach for life? Prosecute for assault and battery? Withdraw scholarships? Does anyone here actually believe that there was some sort of conspiracy to cause an injury?? Because without such an intent, the reactions posted in this thread, and the punishments suggested, are way overblown. The scorn the softball community is more than enough to correct this coach’s behavior. Anything beyond that is overkill.

It will be interesting to see how many of the self-righteous pitchfork wavers refuse to let their kid play in tournaments where the Cruisers play.

I can't see me or those I work closest with filing charges or suing over this. We would, however, circle the wagons and ensure that anytime this coach is involved in a game we're working his stay would be miserable and short. As to the sanctioning bodies' responses, I can't control that. I can control who I work for and who I recommend others avoid.

Although this is definitely inexcusable, I don't consider it that big of a deal nor that scandalous / surprising. Many people who have been involved in this game for a while see this as the direction it is headed.

No dog in fight, but I do have a self righteous pitchfork and a torch..
I say ban him for 5 months,,,,back in June, just in time for season..(and forgotten by then)
Until that time,,,pass the matches.
It was a pity party cheap shot that was taped.
Perhaps it will be on Tosh O. or make top ten Umpire Beanings.

I don't see beaning umpires as a growing trend in the sport.

Video posting of some of the crazy crap that has always happened at the field, that like is a growing trend. Even that is not a new trend.

I talked to a few of my buddies that umpire baseball and other sports. They just called it bush league and asked what the big deal was. It happens. Mainly at the lower levels but it happens. The fact that it happened at a showcase event at 18’s and was recorded is rare but it happens and it happens in all sports. They have seen worse…..

It's behavior like this that gives sports a bad name. So it happens in the big leagues....who cares? Doesn't mean that it is right. The fact is that intentionally trying to cause physical harm to another person is criminal.
