My daughter got lucky the team she is on is just starting up and it was first come first serve. She took her usual #8 but would have settled for #5 if it came down to it.All my daughters use 8 or 5 as that was the numbers I was when I played ball.

I dont think its the number. Its the lack of respect and the way it was handled. Here you have a player who has been with the org longer and has a pole barn, but you have an existing player who is a good pitcher. So the pole barn parents are not to blame in this either? Are you guys saying if you had a pole barn you would tell the team, hey I get number XX or I take my pole barn and leave?

I think had the coaches discussed this a little more with the player and her parents, explained the situation and said it was a tough choice but this is what was decided. The coach could have blamed it on the organization so he would not be in the middle.

Obviously this was not handled properly

What does being good have to do with it?? I don't understand how anyone can think their daughter is more entitled because they are good or they are pitchers. And to clear the thought process my DD is a pitcher so my opinion is not based on pitchers envy. Maybe it could have been done better but its not worth getting this upset about. Either make the choice to move on cut ties or learn from it.
