by Campos » Wed Dec 17, 2008 11:14 am

who are some of the best and some of the worst?

I know the reputations, but how many of these guys/girls can really coach?

From someone who has seen a LOT of high school softball, I have seen a number of games and these are the most consistent I see. They do not always have the most talent on the field, but they win!

This is just my personal opinion. Not my professional opinion as I apparently am not allowed that.

I have mostly seen Houston area teams, but have SEEN some playoffs and gotten to see some of the North and Central Texas teams

TOP OF THE HEAP:

Carla Newsom from Alvin
Richard Jorgensen from The Woodlands
Kevin Cook from Aledo
Brandon Siegel from Shiner
Billy Hicks from A&M Consolidated
Wade Wilson from Brenham
Cynthia Zea from Plano
Wayne Daigle from Smithson Valley
Cindy Mosteller from Garland

GOOD BUT NOT GREAT:
Stacey Herring from Eula
Michelle Rochinski from Montgomery
Kerry Simpson from Cinco Ranch
Jessica Poole from Hutto
Enrique Luna from Bryan
Renee Bialas from Magnolia

Most overrated coaches I have seen:

Kalum Haack from Katy
Jav Vela from Klein Oak

First of all, for an umpire to mention coaches by name in a negative way is poor IMO. Imagine YOUR name mentioned in a list of the worst umpires in Houston.

Secondly, I have worked many of Jav's games, both HS and at the NPF level, and have no reason to doubt his coaching ability. Perhaps he coaches at a higher level than you umpire.

BTW, Haack isn't bad either.

Well man.... that's like your opinion!
When asked how many times she hit Tiger with the golf club, she responded, "I'm not sure...put me down for an 8!

You know what? It would not bother me one bit if a coach listed me as one of the worst umpires! If that is truly his opinion.

I started in league ball and worked my way into tournaments then High School, College and even a few NPF games. I get these "gigs" based on merit.

Vela has been at Oak for years.
Haack has been at Katy for years.

I do not think that my little opinion is going to make them want to kill themselves or get them fired. It is not earth shattering! It is my OPINION!

Vela and Haack are both GOOD coaches, they are NOT great coaches. People want to enshrine them somewhere and I don't see it.

Should I be offended that a fellow upmpire questioned my ability?

Vela is a good coach. Might have had too much of the "Jav Kool-Aid"

I know he had the most talent I have ever seen on a high school team last year and didn't win anything!

Haack is a good coach, just not as good as he thinks he is!

Should the other coaches that he mentioned be upset that you didn't say that they were good? You only mentioned Vela and Haack! I hope the rest of the coaches mentioned can deal with that.

I do not have a problem with naming a coach as good or bad. He didn't get personal. He stated an opinion.

Knowing the mentality of these two coaches, they wouldn't care one bit that someone mentioned them on a message board! At least they are getting mentioned.

Really? What conferences do you work?

I didn't say this would happen or that it is earth shattering. I said it was poor. You certainly have a right to your opinion, but whether it comes "From an umpires perspective" doesn't necessarily validate it. So why mention that you are an official?

Should I be offended that a fellow upmpire questioned my ability?

Depends on who that umpire is. :)

No need to mention the others. Nothing derogatory was said.

Once again, nobody said coaches would be offended. My response had to do with comments made by someone who identified themself as an umpire and my opinion of those comments.

If RexinTex is an umpire, the initial post is inappropriate. He/she is entitled to an opinion. However, when you are being paid to umpire high school games, it is best to keep your personal feelings to yourself. Attempting to add substance to a personal opinion (on a public message board) about the ability of various coaches by identifying yourself as an umpire, is unprofessional.

So as an umpire I can not have my opinions?

I get paid to call the games, so I can't have an opinion?

I call the games the exact same way every game that I call. I don't care who the coaches are. If you are telling me that you do not have an opinion about coaches that you call games for, then you are a liar! I do not DISLIKE any of these guys. I don't know them! I have never had an argument with ANY of them on or off the field! They are always respectful and professional.

If you are truly an umpire, you know that at the High School level, 90% of the time, the game happens too fast to "play favorites" anyways. You call it like you see it! I do my best to be in the right position to make the right call no matter who the teams are.

I merely speak my OPINION, as a person who has seen A LOT of games!

I did not try and "qualify" myself as a softball guru by saying that I am an umpire. I was qualifying myself as an umpire simply to state that I have seen a lot of games!

Vela, Haack et al, have NO CLUE who I am on this board as it is an anonymous forum, and I doubt VERY MUCH that they care.
