Kissimmee, FL- Less than 48 hours after her Women’s College World Series national championship win, the USSSA Pride signed University of Oklahoma catcher Jessica Shults to a two-year deal. Shults and the Oklahoma Sooners swept the University of Tennessee Lady Vols in a best-of-three series in Oklahoma City Monday and Tuesday. Shults, who hails from Valencia, Calif., was named to the 2013 All-Big 12 Defensive Team as well as a 2012 First-Team NFCA All-American and 2011 and 2010 NFCA Second-Team All-American.
USSSA Pride General Manager Don DeDonatis was impressed the first time he saw her play, “Last season when I got a chance to watch her in person in Oklahoma City at the Women’s College World Series I knew that I needed to find a way to make her a member of the Pride. We’re looking for her leadership and talent that lead Oklahoma to the National Championship to help the Pride to the Cowles Cup this summer.”
“Throughout her college career at OU, Shults hit .342 with 239 hits, 230 RBIs, a Big 12-record 61 homeruns and a .995 fielding percentage. She started all 61 games her senior season. Her quick glove and fearlessness behind the plate made her a hot defensive prospect for the Pride.”
Oklahoma Head Coach Patty Gasso had high praise for her former catcher, “USSSA is not only getting a national champion in Jessica Shults, but they are getting a phenomenal leader, a great person and someone who can be a face for their program. Jessica has the ability to elevate the level of play of those around her, but her love for the sport of softball is also infectious. People that are around her have a great passion for the game, and I know that her signing with the Pride will be a great fit for both sides.”
The news of Shults’ signing comes shortly after the signing of her Big 12 Conference rival, Texas pitcher Blaire Luna. The pair spent four years playing against each other, and will now take the field together as USSSA Pride teammates.
Shults and the Pride begin the 2013 season with a four-game series against the NY/NJ Comets Starting this Sunday, June 9 at 8:05 p.m. Don’t miss live game coverage at USSSALive.com, and find the latest news and updates on the Pride atUSSSAPride.com

POMONA, New York -- All but two Bandits in the Chicago starting lineup recorded at least one base hit and Monica Abbott tossed a four-hit shutout in the first game of a double header Friday night. The Bandits went on to defeat the Comets 5-0 in their first road trip to play the New York/New Jersey Comets, the newest addition to the NPF. The Comets acquired the rights to last season?s Carolina Diamonds after the Diamonds folded following the 2012 season.

Angel Bunner started on the mound for the NY/NJ Comets, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs.

The Bandits plated two runs in the first after Megan Wiggins and Amber Patton drew a pair of walks and Alisa Goler loaded the bases with a single. Kristen Butler followed suit with a single of her own as the Bandits took an early 2-0 lead.
Chicago tacked on another run in the fourth after Kazuki Watanabe reached on an error, KimiPohlman hit a single and a single by Wiggins scored Watanabe.
Kristen Butler hit a solo shot in the fifth as the Bandits took a 4-0 lead and Eri Yamada hit another homerun, adding another run as the Bandits went on to defeat the Comets, 5-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Chicago Holds On To Defeat NY/NJ in Game Two, 9-6

Chicago defeated New York/New Jersey in the second game of the double header Friday with the help of a seven-run third inning, defeating the Comets, 9-6. Chicago improves to 5-1 on the season while NY/NJ falls to 1-5 on the year with its loss.
Michelle Gascoigne made her first career start in the NPF. The last time she started in a game, (June 4, 2013) she won a WCWS title with the University of Oklahoma. Gascoigne allowed eight hits and five Comet runs, while striking out six in six innings of work.

Nikki Nemitz came on in the seventh to relieve Gascoigne of her duties and close out the second game of the night.

Olivia Galati started on the mound for the Comets but was replaced by TaryneMowatt in the third.
The Bandits jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Alisa Goler hit a two-out single and Kristen Butler’s double scored her.

NY/NJ got its first run of the series in the bottom of the first off an Amanda Kamekona homerun, which tied the game at one apiece.

Chicago used a huge third inning, plating seven runs off eight hits to take an 8-1 advantage. Eri Yamada and Tammy Williams both hit two-run homeruns to highlight the rally. Also recording hits in the big inning was Goler, Brittany Cervantes, Danielle Zymkowitz, KimiPohlman and Amber Patton.

The Bandits were held scoreless until the seventh inning when the rookies went to work. Maggie Hull came on to hit and singled, she advanced to third and fellow rookie, Nerissa Myers singled to drive her home and give Chicago an 8-1 cushion.
NY/NJ showed some life in the bottom of the seventh and gave Chicago a bit of a scare, plating five runs off six hits. Courtney Liddle hit a two-run homerun to try and spark a rally for the home team.

A couple of singles and an error scored a pair of Comets and forced a pitching change as Nikki Nemitz came in to close out the game for the Bandits. NY/NJ plated a couple more unearned runs but the Bandits offensive surge in the third proved to be too much as Chicago went on to defeat the Comets, 9-6.

The Bandits and Comets play again tomorrow night, Saturday, June 15. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.

Pride/Racers Split Double Header

CORPUS CHRISTI – The USSSA Pride and Akron Racers split a doubleheader on the final day of the NPF Coastal Classic at Whataburger Field Saturday afternoon before 1,650.

The Pride stands 6-2 in 2013, Akron 2-6.

Game One

GiOnna DiSalvatore’s two-run single with two away in the bottom of the sixth was the difference in the Pride’s 7-5 triumph over Akron.

DiSalvatore finished the opener with four RBIs. Her heroics made a loser of Rachele Fico (0-1), on in relief of Brittany Mack.

As was the case Thursday and Friday night, USSSA posted first-inning runs. Mack issued consecutive one-out walks to Caitlin Lowe and Natasha Watley and paid the price. DiSalvatore’s double down the right-field line made it 2-0 Pride.

The Pride added on during the second for a 5-0 advantage, Lowe’s two-run double plating Andrea Duran (walk) and Kelly Kretschman (infield single). Watley’s single off the glove of first baseman Charlotte Morgan chased Lowe home.

The Pride’s Jordan Taylor carried a no-hitter into the sixth but the former Michigan Wolverine allowed five runs on five straight one-out hits, including a game-tying three-run bomb to left by Kaylyn Castillo. Taylor walked two and struck out eight.

Mack, who lasted five innings, permitted seven hits, walked four and recorded three strikeouts.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Sarah Pauly worked the final 1 2/3 for her second victory of the series.

Game Two

Lisa Norris (2-1) dealt the Pride its second loss of the season with a one-hit shutout. The lone Pride safety: Watley’s two-out double in the first.

Norris and Pauly (2-1) threw blanks at each other through the first four innings, the two clubs combining for just three hits. Kelley Montalvo’s one-out, inside-the-park home run enabled the Racers to avert a series sweep.

Norris walked a pair and struck out six. Pauly scattered five hits and fanned five.
