I don't think a HS coach should ever, ever, let the ace pitcher run the bases, I don't care who they are or how athletic they may be. Consider that most of these aces are big, tall kids, 5'10" or above, and momentum and leverage become a big factor on their knees. The risk is just too great to the kid and their future, put in a small zippy courtesy runner please!
I don't agree.
There are some pitchers that don't want to run, and some that can't run well because of their size/height/agility, and that I understand. But, all pitchers do not feel that way, and some are among the most athletic players on their team. As with a lot of situations, it depends on the person.
If you were the parent of a girl who's school was paid for because of her pitching ability, you would agree.
You are not right about that. If your dd is not normally lead-off batter, maybe she is not the same type of player. Regardless, it is often said on here that if the girl is happy, she will play well. Batting, running, getting extra bases is what makes her happy. If she does go to college and play ball, she would rather be #2 pitcher, and get to bat, run, and have a chance to play other positions, instead of just pitching and sitting.
I believe in the WCWS last year, Ricketts stole home when Alabama tried to throw out a runner stealing second. I don’t remember the exact situation, but I do remember thinking that things were really going OUs way, if she was stealing home successfully. As stated above by MavFan, I thought normally pitchers in college do run for themselves because if they are sub'd for twice, they must leave the game?
I am right. In your situation, the player's education isn't paid for because of her pitching ability, but rather her overall athletic ability. In the situation, I described, and in the case of the BH pitcher, the player's education is provided for because of her pitching ability. She had no business running bases in high school.
