I went to the Wiki site on a whim, and it says that Mantle played HS ball, and he was discovered by the Yankees scout while playing on a semi-pro team when he was 16 AND STILL IN HS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, things were really different back then.

if this had of happened on my team the new girl (the team that busted)would just have to pick her a new number. period, if your not giong to stand up for the players you already got you need to start coaching golf or something............same goes for the new girl she sits the bench untill she earns a spot on the team.....sounds like this coach is all about winning and not learning.....whats going to happen when this new girl plays high school ball and they don't have this one number that she want...i 'm sure the school will go out and buy her a new uniform ...... then her Jr. year and she's out grown the new uniform.........school goes out and buys her another....i think not!!!! point said.....................

You talked about changing teams, but would she only consider a new team if they were going to give her the number she wants? If she were presuaded to put the good of the team and orginization before her wants it will be a good lesson and it will be remembered. Believe me when I say it will come back to her and you at some point. I've seen it many times. We as parents need to be careful how we handle, and teach our to handle to our children, if we handle and teach them to handle adversities in a positive manner it can make them a stronger player and ultimately a stronger person. BTW what number is it?

Both my dds have their favorite numbers and would certainly ask for those numbers when they get uniforms - as I am sure the OP would do - but in her situation, as 'tough guy' as my kids are, I think would get irritated by the way this was handled, but it wouldnt stop them from playing. If I were you, with your kid being a pitcher and letting this aggravate her to tears, I would be careful not to let people know who she is. If its this easy to get to her, wouldnt surprise me to see people use it to think up stuff to use against her in the circle.

What I would do, is nothing. It will blow over in a short while. Your daughter will either get used to the new number and like it better, or the other girl will leave after being accidentally pegged about 2-300 times at practice.

OK, if it were my DD I'd ask her how she would feel about the number 01. They are not considered the same, number as far as the line up would go and maybe both kids will be happy with it!

Pitchermom, until I read your post, I was content with lurking on this board.

Mozzy made some very good points.

You and your DD need to get a grip and get over yourselves!

We LOVE to see kids and parents like you playing for our competition as the drama drives a wedge into those teams and the advantage goes to us.

Your response and advice to your DD is going to be a huge lesson for your daughter. This is an opportunity to TEACH her that this is one of the "little things" in life and is no big deal in the whole scheme of things. Or you can TEACH her to be a selfish brat that demands the world revolve around her all the time. It's up to you, but I think I already know your choice.

If DD does decide to walk, don't come to our coach looking for a tryout. The selfish players and parents weren't invited back onto our team last fall and we are better for it. I'm sure she would be happy to recomend you to some of our competition, though. Maybe you could get with those parents and start a new team. :D

One last thought:

Do either of you realize how much you have to be thankful for? We should get down on our knees EVERY morning and thank God for the fact that we live in the U.S.A.!
