Does Your Team Wear Shorts WHY!

What's on your mind?

by NORCALGOLD » Mon Feb 18, 2013 9:51 pm

After noticing the photo of the softball player wearing shorts on the top of Hey Bucket page. It got me wondering why a team would still have shorts as their uniform. If your team does why, what are the reasons and why would you let your DD be told by a coach to wear shorts and then run fast as you can and slide on (corrected sand and clay).

Our travel team has always had shorts, but in the last 2 years some athletes are preferring to wear long pants ... We allow both ... My DD's always prefered shorts ... In the east we play on dirt, rarely decomposed granite ... The HS Teams I have coached have had shorts ... But again, the trend in the East is moving towards long pants ...

That is Oklahoma in the picture. Some teams wear them because that is still the international rule.

Didn't Oklahoma wear shorts in the National Championship game? I think I remember that the players requested it too.

OC Bat Busters always wear shorts as well. Someone told me it was because of tradition.

Sliding shorts and not everyone lives in areas where you can be freaking cold in July. Our kids - back in the day - wore shorts to our December tournaments. But now , all those little babies are playing college ball - and no shorts that I have seen.

Shorts over pants is obviously a poor choice from a safety perspective. I assumed that shorts were originally the softball uniform pant of choice for the same reasons volleyball player uniform shorts were chosen to be what they are. The girls like to look cute while playing their sport of choice. Nothing wrong with that. Proponents roll out the standard justifications: tradition, international behind-the-times tournament rules, comfort in hot weather.....After a player slides hard on the infield, or on the turf outfield, and tears the top layers of skin off of their leg, imho the reasons lose some traction.

My bundle of joy usually even wears pants to practice...we always play in pants...leaving skin all over the field is not a good thing

I don't know about tradition or otherwise, but you couldn't coerce or bribe mine into wearing shorts and we live in South Texas (100 in March - and that is a cool day). They won't even wear them to our teams batting cage since we have an infield behind it and the coaches frequently get a wild hair and decide to do some IF practice too. Last time we wore shorts was in rec CP back when the girls were 7.

If my memory serves me maybe 6 years back in 14u ASA. We played some Texas teams that the girls wore shorts with short socks and no knee pads. Did anyone else see that. Can can only imagine what their shins and knees look like now as young women.
