They would not need to come to practice if they are in a track class. And, they would immensely help any team. Is there a rule against this? I know in college those runners who do not play tend to quit -- Alabama had a Texas player who stole many bases a few years ago. They did try to covert her into position player in the outfield, but it did not work. Give me 20 stolen bases and 1 pickoff any day.

No matter how many stolen bases you have, you still have to get then across the plate to score runs. Some teams do it. Some do not.

First pre-season poll is out. Looks like some are giving the defending State Champions (Deer Park) a little respect. It really suprizes me that Pearland is not ranked higher. But this is just a starting poll alot can change. Bucket Heads what do yall think about the Poll?????

I'm going out on a limb and predicting that the 5A titls stays right here in the Houston area.

This poll is whack! I assume it's based primarily on reputation and last year's finish. Fair enough, but if that's it, some schools seem to be overrated. Can't speak to HouTex and Metroplex so much; Centex is my area. Smithson is deserving, seeing how they're 4A champs and have strong winning tradition. Westlake and RR are overrated. They almost never get past second round of playoffs. (Wong @ Westlake is a star though and will help the Lake to a great regular season record; but playoffs is another matter.) Centex sleeper who deserves love: Cedar Ridge. Singleton best kept secret. Best Centex catcher last 3 yrs; SS in HS. Shows her athleticism. Merrill, the pitcher, is UTSA bound. They'll rock the Centex world this year. Other Austin schools to keep an eye on: Lake Travis and Bowie.

I think that Deer Park has to be ranked at the top at this point in the year since they are State champs and returning all players except 1. Deer park also has the best high school coach in the area quite possibly the best in the state. She will out coach teams that have better players if that makes sence.

Not sure why the Woodlands is ranked so high on this poll. They lost the entir infeild except their 2b, and all their power hitting is gone. They will have a hard time staying in those high scoring games that they won last year. I don't even think the woodlands will win their district. I think that Bryan and Oak Ridge will both give them a run for their money.

Pearland should be the team to beat in the area. They are stacked. They will take them as far as their pitcher will take them as long as she stays healthy it will be a great run for them. The only weakness they havr is their outfeild.

Cinco should do well they have a strong set of juniors and sophmores. They have a good balance of speed and power.

Should be a fun season.

The catcher that Pearland got, from transfer, should make a difference in the offense and defense. I have seen her play and she is a very good ballplayer. Good Power to all fields.
I would agree that Pearland will be the team to Beat, but their #1 pitcher has to have a good year for them to be in the race.

Deer Park lost a pitcher, from graduation, that will be tough to replace. As txpastptchcoach said earlier, the freshman or sophmore Pitchers, will have to step up to give the junior a helping hand. If that happens they might be in the race.

Is there any doubt?

You would think the A&M commit would improve upon last year. Have to agree, they are # 1 until someone beats them.
