Classes?

by 14isgr8 » Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:48 am

Does any of the sanctions in CA have classes ie: A, B, or C class? Every year where I live everyone complains about teams that do not age up in the fall. I feel that it is "travel ball" and you should play whoever is in the other dug out and not complain. Thanks for the input.

Speaking ASA, "A" refers to TB teams. "B" refers to large Rec league All-Star teams. "C" refers to small Rec league All-Star teams.

None of that has to do with playing in the Fall, so not really sure what you're getting at.

It's probably because of being from a different part of the country but why does that have nothing to do with playing in the fall?

Fall doesn't matter because there are no ASA sanctions for playing travel if they are affililated with a rec organization. There are no deadlines of when they have to stop playing travel if they want to play all stars. A player can play travel and rec fall if they so choose or they can play travel in the fall and go back to rec like a lot of younger girls do.

As WickedBlack said, during the Fall, there is no notion of those classes. No sanctioned ASA tourneys and no Rec All-Stars. Unfortunately, still not sure what point you were trying to make with your original post.

I think they are trying to say, why would a kid who just finished playing their second year in a division not move up to the next division in the fall. Second year 10U will be playing 12U in the spring why not do it in the fall?

I see. There could be a number of reasons kids (or teams) wouldn't "play up" in the Fall. Some kids have a late bday and are a grade behind, so while they might age-up on January 1st, they want to stay with their grade-level friends in the fall. Some kids/teams don't feel they're competitive enough, and feel that staying at the current level will provide valuable confidence. And there are always a few sand-bagging strong teams, who stay down just to enter some fall tourneys and collect some hardware.

To the OP's point, yes there's a lot of variety in fall ball due to these reasons and others. So teams would hopefully understand that and limit any whining -- just play who you get and be happy for the competition.

Players, and sometimes whole teams, aren't required to age up until Jan 1. However, most travel teams I know of move up to the next age classification following Nationals in August. The reason is that the travel ball calendar runs from Sept to Aug, rather than Jan to Dec, so teams are preparing to play at the higher level that they will be required to compete in at the next national tournaments. Staying in the lower age bracket until Jan 1 isn't unheard of, but usually invites scorn, charges of trophy hunting, etc.

But as you say, just play the other team and don't complain. That's a good attitude. Run with it.
