Have HS friends of DDs that go to SLO and when we were school searching SLO was ranked in the top 10 nationaly for engineering - public schools. Really a good school. A HYPSM? No. But a good school.

The geography borders on paradise, IMO.

If you have never been there, it rivals Santa Barbara and La Jolla.

I can't imagine any kid that wouldn't seriously consider it after a visit.

There are many excellent West Coast schools- ie Stanford- I just don't consider UCLA upper crust. What rankings are you looking at?

You might need to change your tune not considering UCLA upper-crust. They certainly are. After Stanford, UC Berkeley and UCLA are not too far behind on most lists. According to Princeton Review, UCLA's average incoming freshman GPA is 4.2, average minimum SAT score is 1800.

You asked what rankings I was looking at? Pretty much anything that popped up on a Google search. Here are a few:

Forbes -- UCLA #11 (in the world)
Reuters -- UCLA #13 (in the world)
University Links -- UCLA #14 (in the world)
QS World Rankings -- UCLA #33 (in the world, but 17 above them are not in US, so about #16 in US)
US News -- UCLA #25 (in the US)
4ICU.org -- UCLA #11 (in north america)

Again, I have no affiliation with UCLA, so feel free to consider it a joke film-making school if you insist. I'm just trying to point out that you're probably in the minority.

For the record, Cal Poly SLO is still an excellent school with difficult attendance requirements, and it's a beautiful campus, as Check Writer said. But it didn't rank as high on any of those lists.

Here's my mea culpa

1) It appears I underestimated UCLA- my apologies to those Bruins out there. Probably would still rank in the mid-30s


2) I mistook Cal Poly for Cal Tech- perhaps my "east coast" ignorance showing

3) The worst of all- I initially thought we talking about a player


Perhaps the past two weeks of working in the heat and sun on my deck has effected me???? There has also been a lot of humidity(-for you Cali guys, that's the thing that makes you sweat in FL & Alabama )

I mistook Cal Poly for Cal Tech

Well athletics there is definitely not "upper crust". Had a friend in HS that was recruited by Cal Tech for football but didn't want to play offense, defense AND special teams.

Academics, however, Cal Tech is one of the top schools on the planet with one of the lowest student to professor ratios of any school - plenty of Nobel Laureates sprinkled in for good measure.

JonRiv... got to laugh... CalTech. THAT is an over-the-top school. Heck, over the edge, over the cliff. It's not located in California as that is a sham. It's located in another galaxy, only inhabited by those whos first digit of their 3 digit IQ is a "2". There are colleges and universities and then there is something way..... way.... way out there in, yes, another dimension. And then a little beyond that. Sports there will be marginal until they finalize their anti-gravity and time warp projects and then, oh yes, then... the sports world will take notice. An incredible school for super nerds, the home and resting place of the 2400 SAT clan...

An SAT score of 1800 is at the 82nd percentile. That's your idea of "upper-crust"?
