Different countries and federations have different rules as far as foreign nationals playing on National teams. From what I have gleaned, you generally need to prove to be second or third generation.

In my daughter's case:

My Mother was born in England- therefore my DD would be ok in the UK
On my Father's side- my Great, Great Grandparents came over from Germany-no good(nein, ist verboten) Great Grandparents on the Czech side(don't think they have a team)

Wife's side- Great Grandmother was born there, plus well over 100 relatives to attest for her(that actually can help- so Bravo Italia

There is a caveat- if someone does declare dual citizenship- it can actually make it difficult to get any government clearances(secret, top secret etc...) Not a problem for most people, but in many lines of work it can pose a problem

One exception to that is Puerto Rico- since people from Puerto Rico(or any US Territory) are US citizens, playing for those "National" teams pose no such issues

ISF determines nationality based on passports. Getting a passport and being eligible for their national team varies by country.

Some countries do not allow dual citizenship or only in select cases (e.g. Germany).

Yes, you are right on that. (not sure what other govt id they would used?? as mentioned in the ISF rules)

I was thinking about the country federations and their professional/club leagues, but that is a whole other subject!

I haven't read all 15 pages of this thread, but since the topic has now drifted into international waters I have to ask if going to Nationals and then hoping your daughter is chosen to play for an "elite" team is seriously that important to that many parents?

Yeah, no one really cares. 10 years JNT was something. Last 5 years, I could not name a JNT player or anything memorable from the JNT.

I'm just curious how many parents are climbing their family tree looking for a branch that would allow them to play for another country? I imaginge it's the parents whose kids wouldn't make the team here anyhow. It reminds me of the days before PGF when parents would brag about going to ASA Nationals, and smirk if your team was going to Triple Crown instead. Now add in PGF and all I see is people bickering over who is better, who has better teams, better talent, ect....it seems reasonable to me that teams go to whichever tournament is most practical and cost effective for their team.

All of them. They will be too old for JNT in 2013 except maybe Gabriel. Now I believe it is 16 of the 19 that would have been excluded as they did not play ASA the year they were selected.
