by SLEEVE » Wed Jun 06, 2012 4:04 am

I WAS JUST CURIOUS ABOUT HOW ALL LEAGUE PLAYERS ARE SELECTED. I KNOW EVERY LEAGUE IS DIFFERENT BUT CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME INPUT ON THE SELECTION PROCESS?

And it is political just like almost everything else in high school. In high school mine went from first team all league and Los Angeles Times pitcher of the year for our area to not even a league mention with a change in coaches when the coaches were involved. The coaches provided their nominations and all the coaches in the league voted on who the coaches nominated. Fortunately high school didn't affect college and softball itself means nothing as an adult for most players. She is a self sufficient, college graduate with her bachelors degree with a great job making almost as much as I do with a masters degreee.

POLITICS......oh yeah!!!!! I wanted to give the coach the benefit of the doubt all year until our banquet when it became obvious.......one of his first team all leaguers had the lowest batting average and team high in defensive errors but plays for his travel ball organization. His other two selections got the pitty vote because they are seniors and never received all league awards before yet they also had some of the lowest batting averages and one who is the other first teamer had the second most defensive errors on the team. I thought all league was earned and not based on seniority or whether you play for the head coaches travel ball organization or not. OH WELL GUESS NOT.....CAN YOU SAY POLITICS OR WHAT!!! BULLSH*T!!! :(

Here in CT it seems to be very similar to what you have there:

Teams are allotted slots based on league finish

Coaches submit names from their team-but can't vote on their own players

Coaches vote

Politic definitely play a role:

In towns with multiple team those coaches form voting alliances. There is also several clichs among the coaches. It is not a perfect system- several good players get left off and several mediocre get in. By in large the majority of players are deserving.

The good news is that except for the pride and trophy(or cert) It does not really matter. In our area most of the girls that went on to play in college did not make an all-star team and most of those who did, did not go on to play in college. college coaches do not care! The best my daughter ever did was Honorable Mention for a few years

Batting average are useless- because many of those with big stats did it against the weak links in their leagues(many teams sit their starters against them)

It is political and many times unfair- just not sure how it would be changed
