Speed and agility drills?

What's on your mind?

by Judd » Sat Sep 20, 2008 4:45 pm

DD is small and not super fast. So we want to start doing some drills to help her top speed.

Any ideas before I start googling away?

For baserunning I do sprints out of the box to first base ... if it's a team drill I have them race against different teammates pairing them up with gals of similar speed ... if it's not a team drill, race her against a stop watch keeping track and charting her times so she can see improvement ... I also do the stopwatch as a team drill and keep times to 2nd and 3rd ... then I do the stopwatch for stealing bases with a simulated pitcher or a practicing pitcher in the circle ... and what you will find, as I did, the fastest gals out of the box to first are not always the fastest base stealers ( one year 2 of my slowest gals out of the box where in the top 5 in base stealing )... another team drill is a relay around the bases, half the team starting at 2nd and half the team starting at the dish, each team having a ball to pass like a batton ... I caution you to mark a bases size square in front of the dish so that the team starting at 2nd doesn't have to step on the dish while making the cut towards first ( otherwise the will be landing on their butts) ... also, running laps around the bases ... backwards ... then there is the crowd favorite of duck-walking or doing lunges around the bases... or alternating those 3 in a series of laps ... I've got a million of them if ya haven't thought of these yet ... LMAO

My Dd does speed hurdles, ladder exercises, and plyometrics. A series of hopping type exercises to strengthen and build her legs. She works out with the track coach and we have seen good improvement in her baserunning.
