Concussion law

What's on your mind?

by CoachKnutson » Wed Feb 22, 2012 9:10 pm

Colorado and Minnesota have a new law requiring all youth coaches to have concussion training. How many other states have a similar law on the books? I think it is a good for coaches to have this knowledge even if your state does not require it. A free course with certification is available on line from the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/concussion/headsup/training/headsupconcussion.html
It's only takes about 20 minutes to go through this training.

That's great but if you even suspect that your child has a concussion don't depend on your coach to tell if he/she is OK. Get the kid to a hospital and have them checked by a medical professional. Take no chances.

Required at all HS in CT. My DD had to be pre-screened at college(sets up a baseline for future tests)

Only bad thing about the pre-screening, if you are feeling really smart that day, you over acheive. Then when you get a concussion and you need to keep taking the test till you pass and you just can't get that one answer or two, boooooo

Not sure it it is the 'Law' in VA. ... But, the HS sent me the link last year to take the on-line course*, saying that Virginia High School League required it ... I seem to remember it was free, took less than an hour and you print out your own certificate upon completion ...

* it was worth the time, I learned a few things ...

Pretty dumb response- test is not that hard..... Would you want an athlete that is questionable to go back in?

Sarcasm.... But in all seriousness, I do know some girls who have toned down on their pre-season screening. One girl I know as out for 5 weeks with no signs of a concussion, but because she couldn't get one question right, she couldn't play. I told her it is what it is.

I also know girls who will not say anything when they hit their head just so they can play. Hopefully, their roommates will speak up, but that doesn't always happen either.

Sorry- I'm a little slow this morning (Perhaps too many blows to the head over the years)

DD's HS does annual baseline testing. Hers was recorded in the Fall for field hockey. She did have 1 FH team mate miss a 7-10 days with a concussion after being struck above the goggles with a shot.
