she is a second year ten. played last year. did great. team didn't continue on after nationals.
got on a team in september. it was a rec team that went travel. we are not from that rec league. they all went back to rec. we were asked by a few teams to come out. we found a good team. the logos are NOT on the bags. just a bag tag. and the helmets are nice with just a sticker. I have 2 other girls that play and wouldn't mind big sisters gear thats all. I just asked the question because the last 2 teams we kept the gear. I am NOT one of those parents. if that is standerd practice so be it. no big. I was just asking. they can have it back.

Trust me... the team needs the gear. If you leave the team, you dont. Why would you want to be a PIA?

Well....... when you only lose 2 players and everyone else returns..... that meant I only had two uniforms to collect:) So I am 50% right now.

Sounds like the 2 teams that let you keep the stuff are no longer teams... Maybe this team will be your 1st real travel team. I also feel bad for the manager picking you up if you are already bitching on HB about the team, I wonder whats gonna happen if she does not bat 1 game, or has to sit out an inning?

Who's bitching? I don't know what you are reading but I see an OP asking a simple and valid question about what is the norm on start up fees. Something that they have not been through because the dd has only been on 3 teams so far and 2 of them let them keep the gear and are no longer together in TB, where as the current one wants it back. Everything is not a parent conflict...Jeeeesh!

My advice is give the gear back if you leave. That is the right thing to do IMO.

Hey Battle, I actually agree with you!

I also agree with a previous post about how much softball crap you will collect over the next 6 - 8 years (I guess more since you have younger DDs). First year as empty nesters and going through the house room by room and PURGING. Looking forward to getting to the garage and purging the pitching machine, 10 buckets of balls, AT LEAST 20 gloves, maybe 10 helmets, only the 6 or so "good" bat bags (cheap ones are long gone), you get the idea.

It is going to take DW a bit to psych up for that.

Then I will have room to work on my hot rod to get that back on the road - miracles do happen.

I agree that he's not bitching. It was a legit question and he came to a good information source for the answer.

His DD is 10 and this is her 3rd team for completely legit reasons.

We are looking at a new team. they want a start up fee of $350. it includes uniform's helmet and bag. they want me to sign a contract that says if we leave we have to return all the gear. is that normal? we didn't do that on the last 2 teams we were on.

If you pay 350 shouldn't you be able to keep the gear? what happens if you don't turn it back in? just curious.

My daughter has been doing this going on 5 years now and I've got more bags and helmets in my garage than I need and she has a whole drawer of team uniforms from teams that have folded, merged, whatever.

The cost and contract terms that you describe are pretty standard from my experience. I wouldn't have a problem signing such a deal provided you understand what tournaments the team is planning on attending and what the monthly dues are.

$350 x 12 = $4200, which should pay for at least 2 good uni's, a helmet and bag per kid, buy alot of balls, hitting nets and prepay the application fee to several of the big tournaments out there

I doubt the coach or coaches are getting rich doing this, If you added up the hours these coaches put into coaching your kid and the travel time away from home its a bargain. They aren’t doing for this for huge monetary gain.
