Dothe "helpers" of the head coach and asst. coach go through any background checks or get fingerprinted? Just curious

If I am not mistaken, anybody (head coach, assistant coach, scorekeeper) dealing directly with players in ASA must be ACE certified, which now includes some form of background check. I know at certain tournaments, these individuals must show / wear their ACE certifications. If you have questions about a particular individual working or in direct contact with your child, you need to address it with the head coach and head of the organization your daughter plays for. There is also a website (Megan's Law http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov/ ) which you can search individuals by name or area. Any time it's dealing with YOUR child, be proactive!!!!!

If not mistaken, I think the ACE is only for ASA. Not sure what requirements all these other ogranziations require. Even the background check completed by ASA is not to the same level as livescan fingerprinting and clearence through DOJ.

I seriously doubt even head and assistant coaches are background checked for many travel ball teams since alot of teams don't participate in ASA/PGF/TCS tournaments. Let alone the Dads that are helping.
The bottom line is that these girls are our daughters we should protect them ourselves by always being aware of what they are doing. Never leave your daughter alone with a coach or helper, I sure don't. This is the easiest way to protect your DD because even a background check is not 100% protection.
Also as a coach you should never allow yourself to be alone with someone's DD.

Imperial SB is right, dont put them in a position to be alone. You dont have to come off as overprotective, just do it ALL the time and it becomes the norm. I did everything with my dd and so it would have been weird for me to not be around. I didnt miss practices , games, or lessons. It was just part of softball life for me. The parents that always leave for practices, or leave their kids with others for games, or drop off for lessons are the kids that run into problems. There would be a whole lot less predators and these news stories if everyone followed these simple things. Yes it takes a lot of time from your schedule, but thats what it takes

The ACE Certification and the background checks are separate items. Every "registered" coach or "on-field team representative" must be background checked for both PGF and ASA sanctioned play and, in the past years, ID cards showing that you have passed the background check by the sanctioning body, worn and displayed to be on the field. ACE Certification is a coaches training program by ASA and each team is required to have one or two in the dugout at all times. I do not know that there is a mechanism in place for background checks on parents assisting with practices. All good advice above.
