Logic? The runner was between 2nd & 3rd at the time the ball left the fielder's hand. Now, add two bases. Third is one, home is two. Not really that hard to understand.

Batter fly's out, runner does not tag up immediately on the catch but returns to original spot being 1st base. On return to 1st but not there yet, throw from outfield going to F3 is over thrown into the dugout which means runner is awarded two bases from time of throw. Runner is still required to tag 1st is she not? So, in my way of analysing it, R3 needed to touch 1st as base number one at time of throw and then is awarded 2nd base as her 2nd base.

Have you read the other posts and explanation? The touching of the bases have nothing, nada, zero, zip, nil to do with the awarding of bases on an overthrow or blocked ball.

Perhaps we should all post hypotheticals from our respective fields of expertise, and then belittle anyone who has questions about our answers.

Not to worry Kate. Here's some rare footage of MTR double-checking his logic in the last discussion he was involved in:

1) When a runner is between two bases when the ball goes dead, the two base award is governed by the position of the runner when the ball left the throwing fielders hand.

2) A runner is allowed to complete tagging up even when a ball goes dead.

defensive coach is then ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct when he has a heart attack and calls you a few expletives. Plus all the parents who "never heard that before" hate you.

Alternatively, if the base runner fails to touch 1B, the runner may be out on a dead ball appeal by defense... in which case you must eject the offensive coach...

 :ugeek:

LOL on the coaches getting tossed... hopefully you will have fewer ejections next season as at least the HB coaches will know the rule. (not implying that some of you don't already!! :o )

So the key to this, above and beyond where the runner is when the throw is made, is that she must return to 1B to tag up.

So at what point do you award home? What if, when it goes dead ball, she turns back around (without touching 1B), goes to 3B (or 2B for that matter) and just stands there on the bag?

I ask because I've heard coaches tell girls, if they (the BR) aren't sure where to go, it's better to get on a base, any base, as opposed to stopping and looking lost somewhere between bases (where she might get tagged out - although obviously not here as the ball is dead).

All your doing is hesitating slightly to allow the runner to complete her responsibility to tag up and thus, avoiding the worst thing .. the tie.

So your watching.. she touches, boom - appeals off! dead ball.. award home.. game over get the heck outta dodge.

If your runner does anything but go to first, I'm yelling at her to touch first, then awarding her home, yelling ball game, then getting out of dodge. LOL!

Or maybe people should actually read the posts. Of course, we are then assuming they are at the reading comprehension level of the third grader. Don't be fooled. The only people who say there is no such thing as a stupid question are people who constantly ask stupid questions.

Thanks Wade for the a clearer explanation of the rule. We don't normally carry US Softball rule books here in Canada or I would have looked it up. This was an interesting rule question and I am going to see what our rule book has to say about it.

VegasDad: I thought the same answer as you as the runner still needed to tag and I assumed that would be their first base. You learn something new everyday.

MTR: I actually asked Wade for a second explanation to your answer as it was not clear to me, so there was no reason for you to be rude and question someone's intelligence.

Considering that your obvious motivation in initiating this thread was to dazzle the rest of us with your superior knowledge on the subject, I would think that you would welcome questions that let you show it off.

We all participated because the hypo that you posed was interesting, but I doubt many of us cared enough to get overly exacting in our analysis. I myself couldn't be bothered to reach 3 feet for my rule book, let alone leaf through it to find an answer--especially when I knew that I could count on the aforementioned dazzlement. Don't confuse stupidity with indifference.

By all evidence an easier task than passing yourself off as a logician. ;)

MTR...never mind the crap the Skarp uploads on this site. He's just passing time on company time while you and the rest of the world actually work for a living.
