Umpire Training Requirements

by Crusher » Tue Nov 08, 2011 12:48 pm

Just a simple question here, but can someone intelligently comment on what training VTD umpires receive? Do they stay in a Holiday Inn express (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dOHEw8izno) :?: :o do they attend a weekend seminar and then are vested with the title of ‘umpire’, do they watch a training video on the internet, do they have an minimum hrs training requirement or continuing “professional development” requirements, are there testing requirements, is there a vision test  , do they start out with T-Ball, work their way up, is there a peer review, is there an I.Q. requirement, can some ne help me out here with this rhetorical question please

I have had mostly good and some bad umpires with Oscar and let him know after the fact. However, I have found my share of bad umpires all over.

ASA has a test that you have to take and field time, but not sure about VTD. My 15yo DD got certified to call Rec, but was too lazy to sign up tell the scheduler. Guess $30/game wasn't good enough for her if she has to get out of bed and not actually play.

Sward,

He told you it was a rhetorical question. It was not even a question as much as a statement. He evidently had a rookie or poor umpire and thought he would insult all umpires.

So an answer was not expected from him.

Hmmmm....all about the $$$$? Let's see...I'll clock in this morning, get into about a dozen arguments, be told I've don't have a clue, I'm blind, and I don't know the rules. I'll be cussed at, verbally assaulted...and sometimes phyisically assaulted. What a job!!!!

Yes, it's all about the $$$$....

Don't know about rhetorical, but how about factual? 9 out of 10 VTD Blues are ASA trained and tested...

Surprise... :o :o :o

go through the same training ASA goes through! matter of fact one could say VTD is sticking it to ASA, using ASA umpires with ASA training to do VTD events. No, i'm not Joe so don't go there...just sayin all of North Texas Umpires have a couple of hats in their closet some say VTD or ASA.

Worst Umpiers in no specific order: Southlake, Garland, Forney
what do these have in common. It is not ASA... while SOME of them may still call an occasional ASA Tournament they do not. I would not lump these guys in with ASA...
All Blues will make mistakes it is normal. We don't expect them to be perfect.
It is when they are Unapproachable, do not pay attention, they do not know the rules, they DO NOT CARE!!

I have noticed the caliber of umps go down since ASA/ VTD split. I do not know why.
I will say there are still some VTD parks that have Overall Good Umpires, funny think those are the ones that STILL call ASA.

So to all you BLUES who still call a fair game this is not directed at you... There are still plenty of you out there... Just seems you aren't at these other parks.

I know GARLAND had another horrible time with umpires this past weekend. I know we now look at tournaments based on how we are treated by the umpires. The list of parks we prefer not to play at is now 2...and most likely growing. No excuse for some of these Blues behavior!
