First let me say that child predators are no joke and something we must all make sure we are constantly aware of. Megan’s Law has allowed society to be informed of who is around them and be able to better protect their children.
However, with the institution of these new laws comes the risk that someone who is not in the same class as a child molester or child predator can have their life ruined forever. Unfortunately, Megan’s law does not explain the incident and only labels a person a sex offender. They list the Penal and other various California Code sections that were violated however sometimes those do not tell much about the facts either.
I am a longtime family friend of Ray Ramirez and if anyone does their homework on how the Megan’s Law website works or at least made an effort to understand why some information is “missing” in certain places on the site or what certain entries mean you would see that this is one of those unfortunate situations where the site falls short. Since the website does not tell you the circumstances behind the situation, I will.
The charge against Ray Ramirez occurred in 1958. Fifty-three years ago. (Which the website fails to report). Ray was a senior in High School (17 years old) and had a girlfriend who was a Freshman. Her parents didn’t care for Ray and eventually turned him in to the police because of his relationship with their daughter. That's it! Not horrible man stalking children! It could happen to any one of our kids! If you look at the website it shows you the “Prior Code” from 53 years ago when they used to classify any sex offender as having a mental disorder. Ray had a public defender and lost his case. He served his time. Time for have a freshman girlfriend when he was a senior in high school.
The website doesn’t distinguish severity of the offense and merely reports “sex offenders” so 25 years ago when Megan’s law was founded, they reported it.
Sadly, when people see him on the website they assume he is a monster and a child molester, not a 17 year old high school senior with a freshman girlfriend. Big difference if you ask me, but all the same in the eyes of Megan’s Law.
So please make sure you have the facts or at least try to get the full story before you blindly declare someone a monster. And I suggest you make sure you remind your sons who are in high school what can happen to them if they decide to have a relationship with a younger girl. THAT LAW has not changed. It can end up branding them for life. Oh yes, and don’t forget to tell your sons (and daughters) not to urinate in public….that too is considered a sex offense in the eyes of the law.
Please leave Ray Ramirez alone. He is a great coach, caring father, wonderful grandfather and has lead a peaceful crime-free life except for dating a girl several years his junior when he was just a kid some 53 years ago.
