Unbelievable - Have You Seen This Before?

What's on your mind?

by dustyshoes » Thu Aug 07, 2008 8:42 am

Have I seen this kind of thing before? Yes, but not in softball.

There was a guy I went to High School with who was blessed with incredible speed and athletic ability. Our losing football team coaxed him into joining our team at midseason and our fortunes immediately changed. By the time our offensive linemen initiated contact with defensive players at the snap of the ball he was already through the hole and racing towards the endzone, he'd take one cut in the secondary and race past defensive backs who had an angle on him.

By springtime he went back to his main sport which was the 100 meter dash for the track team. I was also a track and field guy so when the six of us who qualified for the state meet went, our coach was certain that this guy was going be our school's first state champion. The only problem was, he didn't show up for the finals. He was there at the stadium in his uniform with his spikes on and just didn't feel like showing up for his date with destiny. He was just as calm and nonchalant about out it as could be on our very quiet ride home from the meet.

This guy wasn't an arrogant jerk or anything and got along well with teammates in all sports I played with him, he was always pretty much a loner though. Although I lost touch with him I heard he became an alcholic not long after high school.

I don't buy the finances aspect for the reason Bill's player no-showed Nationals. If finances were the reason and the girl really wanted to go, they would have given some hint to that effect beforehand. It could have been the girl, the parents or some combination of both but I think you just got another one of those strange breeds of athletic free agent nomads that wander this and every other sport.

I wonder if the pitcher in question and her family had some other issue about the team? I assume they left a team to join this team? If everything was rosy and cozy, why refuse to return calls? Why not call and make up some lie to save face (as was mentioned)?

There is something missing from this story.

Dad drives a Mercedes. Player has an I-Phone. Player had been with another ASA team some time ago but was actually playing Little League when we brought her on board. I don't think money was an issue.

We had an overnight team party the Saturday before we left for Nationals and she was there. She left early from practice on Sunday. The players all liked her a lot and she seemed to like the other players a lot. If there is something missing from the story I don't know what it is and that's the reason we're flummoxed.

If they are from Burbank, I know who it is. Rumor has it (and I am confirming) that the LL(little league) team was going another step. I know this because there is another player on the same LL team that bailed on a team going to USSSA Nats and indirectly it came up in conversation today..

These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.

You go it! I just did some Googling and see where the conflict existed. That renders the conduct inexcusable.

I can only infer where she chose to play but I am certain that she did NOT play with our team. I suspect she chose Little League but that's the problem isn't it... We heard nothing from them at all.

That is quite the quote from the coach. Maybe that is why the player decided to not go to Nats, too many days in a row of playing

and follow that up the next day with a couple-three more.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......
