GETTING OUT IN FRONT

I was watching the 'stros last night and the announcer said Lance hasn't been hitting home runs because he isn't getting out in front of the ball. Instead he has been hitting a lot of grounders. Now, I tried to emulate this softball wise (with meat pitches) and it appears that if you "get out in front of the ball" (meet the ball before it gets deep?), you would hit more grounders than flies. Is the announcer "off"...or am I misunderstanding the phrase...or am I wrong. I tried graphic simulations with the same results.

Baseball announcers utter the dumbest phrases known to man - with such frequency - I find it hard to believe you actually analyzed that statement.

This generally happens because they don't have anything meaningful to say, but feel they have to fill in the time, and so resort to anything that might sound authentic baseball-ese.

I would advise you watch the game with the sound muted, and your stereo blasting mind-numbing heavy metal. Better to ponder the meaning of rock lyrics than the meaning of sports commentary.

I am guessing that you are asking is that becuase he is in front of the ball and so rolling over them and hitting a ton of groundballs and that makes sense. However, it is more about bat angle that causes that because a ball can get in your kitchen and you pop it up. It is about bat position and getting to a position to be successful. I do not think this is the thread to get into mechanics but I would enjoy that conversation when one wants it. I think I answered your queation, but I am new to the site and still trying to get a feel for it.

Commentators will say anything whether or not it makes sense. I once heard John Madden say the key to this game is "They have to stop the pass and they have to stop the run" Perhaps if they just stop the PATs..
