2012s SATs

First, U Texas can only be compared to other public schools in Texas on the top 10% plan passed by the legislature a decade ago. It cannot be compared to private schools and it cannot be compared to other state schools on students admitted because 85% of the student body is admitted automatically as being in the top ten percent of their high school class. You can compare it by nobel laureates, research monies, graduate schools, etc.

Second. in dealing with 20 schools with my 3 kids I have NEVER heard any coach or admissions officer say I want ACT over SAT or SAT over ACT. There are reliable conversion charts and most schools publish charts on both in terms of admission.

Finally, every kids school find the school that fits their needs. Look at class size, majors offered, rural vs urban, types of students. Some schools are national schools, (Texas, Tx A&M, OU, OK State, etc), some are regional schools, (Tulsa, TCU, SMU), and some are more local (Incarnate Word, OCU). If you want to stay in a state, go to the school that helps you achieve your goals. No one can say if Harvard is better than those schools unless you state your goals. BTW I do know a kid who went to Yale for their forestry graduate degree! Did his internship in Alaska with a Yale professor.

I was talking to a friend this weekend at CC when a college coach walked up and we all started chatting amongst each other, when out of the blue the college coach says "It always concerns me when a 2012 does not have a SAT score".

This is to Coaches and Parents to get your kids to take the SAT or at the least Post your SAT score(Good or BAD). Then the Coaches at least have something to work with, if you don't have your SAT scores Coaches start thinking your trying to hide something.

Better to have it and not need it, then it is to need it and not have it. The TBA is not working well with the Coaches.

Anyone who has to ask if SATs are neccesary is in real trouble and has really dropped the ball in the process to help DD succeed to her fullest. These tests are the great 'equalizer' when it comes to colleges evaluating students from all over the country from different school systems, GPA's, curriculums, etc.

The timetable is...

PSAT by her sophomore year
SAT prep courses through her sophomore year and into her junior year, especially the summer.
First SAT by December of junior year
Second SAT (if needed), spring semester
Additional tests and prep if needed
jonbovi's advice is accepted at all trade schools...hairstyling, nose picking, ass scratching. etc.

You were doing well until the last line- as the ACTs are excepted in about all Colleges and Universities in the US- All but the last thing Joe said are valid- check with your DDs guidance counselor and the University's admission office for the appropriate test for the individual

I always do well...and yes the ACTs are sometimes "excepted"... A classic example of where you don't want to end up..."excepted" vs "accepted". Thanks for the gift jonbovi...

Beware of HS guidance couselors. In big public schools, you're just a number and they will shuffle you through and move on to the next unsuspecting target.

jonbovi's best (and only)advice...check and double check with your admission's office at your choice of college. Take control of your own destiny and don't rely on others to guide you through the process...

Joe- thanks for catching the spelling error- I'm a little tired this morning

Good advice on the Guidance Counselors- depends on the HS. Those here at our local HS are exceptional and operate as mini-college recruiters. My recollection when I went to HS was that my own guidance counselors were worthless

Another good point(I hear hell is freezing over) is taking charge of your own destiny. During the recruiting process I heard more false info and BS than I care to remember

-ask the admissions office
-ask the coach(some coaches have huge leeway-others have none-and everyone else falls in-between in the acceptance process)
-find out what is right for your own situation
-manage your expectations

I went to bed last night thinking Uno had put a nice twist on this thread (back to the subject at hand) but here we go again ehh? You guy's need to find a bar at a nice half way point, sit down and throw back a couple of coldies and settle your differences!!! One thing I have to say...you never back down. While others have left in disgust from Joe and his words of wisdom, you've bowed up and stood your ground. Your employer must be very understanding to allow you to surf HB all day...trying your best to deflect my bullsh#t. I'm one of those retired wealthy ones, not from Harvard, that can go all day if needed...but you seem to be one of those dads excited about the prospect of sending one off to college. I've done it four times and it is exciting...to watch one of your own grow up to be a responsible adult. It's okay to listen to advice but ultimately, mom, dad and DD have to make the right choices. There will be some wrong turns along the way, but persistence pays off and mistakes are only 'teaching moments'.
