When Harvard banned the ROTC...they landed on many P.O.S. lists...

...2300+ on the SAT and a fat wallet (or a prized pupil of affirmative action) will get you into Harvard...

If you're going there to play softball...I would only ask "why?"

Despite not offering ROTC(dropped in the 60's for political reasons and kept off due to "Don't ask don't tell) Which as an ROTC grad I have a problem with. You will have a tough time making the argument it is not a top school. Why play softball at Harvard- if softball can get you into a school where your grades alone can not- why not??? My DD is not going to be a professional softball player, but the quality of school and reputation it has will go a long way to establishing a successful career.

If a prospective student can score better one test over the other(SAT or ACT) Does it not make sense to take both and submit the higher score????

As for the ROTC question, even though Harvard does not offer it directly, Harvard students can still enroll in ROTC through MIT. My school was a similar situation. I served with a fellow cadet who was from Harvard at FT Bragg for Advanced Training and later with two other Harvard Graduates who were LTs at FT Benning for Airborne and Infantry Training

Whoa...whoa now...where did I say Harvard wasn't a good school? First...let's define "good". Yes, It attracts the brightest students in the world...albeit one of them is named Obama And, yes it's hard to get in to...which is why if you do get in to this type of school...perhaps it's time to hang up the cleats and take advantage of "the quality of school and reputation it has will go a long way to establishing a successful career". Your words...

With or without softball, if you're a qualified candidate...you're a good student... and there are many schools available to hone your scholastic skills... and call it a day on the dirt. There are many great (and perhaps better) alternatives to Harvard...if softball won't "get you in"...

And ROTC? They offer it now...but only after Obama did away with "Don't ask". Even before 'don't ask" they had a long history of dismissing the men and women of the military and for that...and their liberal slant, they don't have my respect.

I'll take "uncultured and ignorant" any day over the jackasses who turned their backs on our folks in uniform. You see my rookie friend...there are charcteristics that define many folks...smart, intelligent, billiant, genius, exceptional intellectual ability...typical of the your Harvard heroes. Then we have...honest, loyal, upright and fair, brave...my type of hero.

So the story goes...you can take your Harvard "good" school ...and shove it sideways. I'll be happy to take the guy and gal who will put their life on the line for you and me...all day, any day!

People often wonder about a kid attending a school like Harvard and choosing to play softball. We know a kid very well who is currently at Harvard and plays softball. She happens to be a pretty Damn good player who loves the game, is quite bright and is admirably ambitious. I wish my son was interested in her and vice versa.

I doubt that kids go there to play softball as there are so many comparable college teams to choose from. There are fewer schools that look better on a resume than Harvard. Some kids that attend Harvard happen to also have enough softball ability and the desire to play on the team.

There may some instances where 'the game' may be used to get you into an elite college. I tried it with DD #1. Got into the school of her choice and dropped softball like a hot potato...finshed with two degrees in four years without 'the game' taking up all her time.

Far too often, I've seen where an extremely smart kid would be better off realizing that it was fun while it lasted...and "let's use this gift of extra brain power to get kicked started on my career". Just like some old coaches who don't realize their time has come and gone, the same applies to some of these kids, especially ones who have the luxury of walking into a demanding academic environment.

Then there are those w/ a 400 BA and/or 65mph fastball...who struggle to reach 50 percentile on their SAT.

Don't disagree with any of that Joe. I currently have 2 kids that play college ball and both have really enjoyed it. I think it has added a positive dimension to their college experience that non-players don't get. Personally, if I had to choose for my kids to play a sport or graduate one year earlier, I would urge them to play the sport. Both are also considering whether they want to play ball overseas for a couple years after graduation and then get a real job. I tell them they probably have at least 40 years of working ahead of them so if they can play overseas before starting that, then do it. My son will be a senior and will take 18 units his last two semesters. He hasn't decided if he will play or not. If he decides to play and sees his GPA start to drop, I'm quite sure he will quit the sport.

I guess you did not read my post, but again Joe you only read what you want. I served in the Military and am certainly aware for what it stands for. I am also aware that what makes this country great is alternative viewpoints to the same thing. Do I agree with the "liberal"slant of a Harvard- no (however Harvard Business School is hardly Liberal!!)- "W" was a graduate. I think a bunch of wealthy conservatives going to Harvard and being exposed to a dose of LIberalism is not so bad- just as some bleeding heart going to a Conservative Southern School might learn something as well. We tend to have more in common than differences. Joe- you seem to like you like to look for the differences and to find some conflict
