2011 miss softball canidates

I saw that the nominations have come out and some of them are good candidates like Whitney Arion, Katie Harrison and others but some others I can't believe! I don't know how this process works but it is wrong and needs to be fixed. I saw that Natalie Newell from Goshen was chosen from her district and couldn't believe it. This girl may be good I have never seen her play but I can not imagine she is better than some of the other girls in her district. She is going to a small NAIA school that is nothing! What about Jenna Simon going to Notre Dame or Andrea Filler going to Boston College or Ashley Burkhardt going to Purdue? I'm sure I am forgetting some others in this district as well. It baffles me that this girl would get nominated. Andrea Filler and Ashley Burkhardt have both won a state title and have been at the top of the state in battig average and home runs all year. Andrea Filler led the state in hitting as a junior and again was at the top as a senior. That's just batting not to mention her pitching. She has 15 plus wins and less than a 1.00 ERA. As you can see I would of voted for Andrea Filler as Miss Softball and she didn't even get NOMINATED!!! Something is wrong with that. Any of the 3 girls mentioned would of been a better choice than Newell. I don't see how the top hitter in the state for 2 years and one of the best pitchers in the state doesn't even get a NOMINATION ! Absolutely unbelievable and the system needs changed!

Just throwing my two cents in here...I'm sure this discussion can be made for every single district. The system we all know is extremely flawed. Stats are not accurate, depending on who does the book, sometimes parents looking to give Susie the extra hit and not give Susie's ex best friend one. It's an old story with the same ending and no one is ever happy about it. The one hope is that the girls who have been picked for the All Star game are truly the best senior players that Indiana has to offer. Beyond that, it is simply politics and a good sales job by the coach. And if your coach isn't well liked or respected...

There are still eight teams playing for state championships this weekend and they all have their heroes that have gotten them to where they are but will everyone who is deserving get their due accolades and respect? No but the girls will still be happy that they have given everything to the game and school they love. And that is what counts in the end. Maybe that is what the adults need to remember here.

I know Andrea, very good player/kid!!! But, your an IDIOT, just like cougar! Trash the system, not a teenage girl who is just as good! If i didn't know better i would say your p**sed off parents! Pretty sad when the "grown ups" act worse than the teenagers!!!!

It is EXTREMELY unlikely that either of these screwball posters are parents of Andrea Filler. Know them personally and they would never call out another player in this fashion and their daughter is such a class act, she wouldn't allow it. While it is utterly ridiculous to call out a player like has been done here, I do like the attention that the system for recognizing HS player achievement is receiving. If your coach is not a member of ICGSA, you are excluded automatically. If your coach doesn't attend the meetings, you have zero chance. If your coach doesn't make a concerted effort to lobby for his players, pass out flyers and shake all the right hands, your chances shrink. In our district, if you don't play for a large school or play in Indy proper regularly, your chances are minimal. Notice that nothing has been said about batting average, strikeouts or record? I guarantee a player could hit .600 at our high school and several other small schools in our district and not even get a sniff. Our school has won two Class A state Championships and never even had a player make Honorable Mention, according to our coaches. Exactly HOW does that happen?

Good question. I have a suggestion that I'm sure will blow some minds. We have class tournaments in every sport. Why do we still have just one Mr./Miss in each sport? Why not Class A Miss Softball, etc.? You may argue that it "waters down" the recognition but I wholeheartedly disagree. So what if we have three extra Mr./Miss whatever qualified by class? Convince me I'm wrong.....

What ever people think of the system, the players or high school softball it is what it is. Can it be better--sure. The thing is, these kids who are nominated are nominated by coaches in their districts. Not by the fans and parents who watch the games. If you listen to 95% of the posters on this board there are only a couple of kids and teams who deserve to be playing softball. I think people who jump on here and bash players, teams, and coaches should just get over themselves. Softball was here a long time before you hit the sceane and will be around long after you leave.
