Pick Up Player System

by Vess Express » Fri Jun 03, 2011 11:50 am

Why are you so concerned about who is playing in all of these local tourneys? If a team has a pick up player, so what? Who are you to tell people where they can play, and if they have the proper skill level to be playing in a certain tourney. If they meet whatever the eligibility requirements are, let it go already.

I have a feeling that the ones complaining about the pick up players are the parents of the girls already on the team, who may not get to play as much as they want to. From what I've seen, the pick ups allow those girls to continue to be on the team, and let them have a chance to play against the teams more on their level.

Championship play has set rosters. Everything else should be handled by the parents so that their dd gets a chance to play as much as they want/need, and stay within their skill level. Don't put it on other people to take care of your needs.

Vess, whether you realize it or not I do believe you just SUPPORTED the people against pick-up players when you said GIRLS ALREADY ON THE TEAM MAY NOT GET TO PLAY AS MUCH AS THEY WANT. That is 1 of the valid points against pick-up players. The kids who practise hard and play week in and week out have to sit the bench while pick-up players play. If I was you I would try a different view on the subject.

I can see what you are saying. I kind of mixed two different thoughts together. I think because you have posters (some of whom appear to be the same people under different names) complain about some poor teams not getting their chance to win a tourney because other teams have pick up players. When, in reality, the poster is actually mad because they believe their dds are getting cheated out of playing time by pick ups on their own team. Let me try this:

Don't worry about what pick ups are on other teams. Play whoever shows up. Especially true if it is one of hundreds of local tourneys.

Pick up players also play and practice hard, I imagine. If they did not, no one would want to pick them up.

How about figuring out why the team needs a pick up player? If one girl is sitting out considerably more than the others, maybe this is not her skill level. Maybe those parents need to find a way to get her the proper amount of playing time. One more thing that's good about pick up players. Your dd can be on one team to play a lot, and another to get challenged.

Lastly, if I were a coach getting a pickup player, I would try everything I could to get in all of the girls at least part of the time, where they really want to play. It usually ends up with the parents still not happy, but you should still try.

I think that the whole pick-up player discussion is a good one to have but there's no point in really going on and on about it because the only solution is to lock rosters at the beginning of each season but we all know that isn't a realistic option. Play the team you're scheduled to play. If you lose to a team with a pick-up player, move on and work to get better.

I'm not against pick up players as teams need them from time to time for injuries or what not. I have a problem with players from A teams dropping down and picking up in B tournaments. Any of you that don't see a problem with this obviously shouldn't be involved in youth sports. My players committed to play for me this season. I committed to coach them. What else do we need beyond that than to teach kids to honor committments by honoring them ourselves. It would be real easy to grab the best A pitcher looking for a team and roll through a tourney, but if you ask my girls if they want me to, I bet the vote is 11-0 against. I'm committed to my girls! End of story.

Here in SoCal there is no such thing as being a pickup player except at the end of summer if you are going with a team to Nationals.
You get on a team and you play and practice with that team throughout the season unless you quit and leave for another team. Anyone with an extensive resume of teams is looked down on and considered trouble.
I don't understand the argument of needing to pick up to get more games. What are your teams doing every weekend that players are sitting around with nothing to do? We play games almost every weekend so there wouldn't even be time to go play with someone else.
Can someone explain????

Spazsdad, Alot of teams in Texas carry small rosters. Around 10 players. They do that to keep parents and dd's happy with playing time. The problem is if little Jane has a wedding or family reunion or anything that causes her to miss a tournment then your down to 9 players, so the team picks up a player. Or if you have a player get hurt then you pick up a player.

On the other subject most teams play a max of 3 tournments in a row then take a week or 2 off. There are some teams that play only 2 in a row. So girls pick up with other teams because most coaches do not have a rule that they cannot pick up.

Just beat a team with pickups in our B tournament; an A pitcher, A catcher and SS from another good team but not A I don't think but they probably will be shortly. Those three batted 1, 3 and 5 and accounted for most of their runs. Three regulars sitting on the bench watching them play. Wow! Very satisfying win for my girls. The A's coach was even on the field helping coach! Came back from down 3 in last inning to win by 2. Feel bad for kids on the bench who got up before 6am to come sit and watch pickups play. What a joke. This has got to stop. Come on B coaches. You're the only one's who can stop this. Are wins really that important? They're 10 years old. Remember that. Treat them like it. They want to play or they wouldn't be there.

True, in Texas there are plenty of small rosters. Another problem I have seen develop over some time are new teams being created and splitting the talent pool. Not good for TX teams down the road at national competitions. JMO

What kinda coach wants to force a girl to stay on a team who wants to go play somewhere else?

Conversly, what kinda coach would pick up a girl (especially one KNOWN for "team-hopping") and thereby crap on all the other players that are already on the roster?

In either case the coach in question would seem to be much more focused on trophy-hunting and self-aggrandizement and much less focused on teaching fundamentals and sportsmanship to the girls....and isn't it all this supposed to be about helping THE GIRLS?

I guess i can understand picking up if you have a small roster and there's an injury to a KEY position like your pitcher--but even then only in the most extreme circumstances.
