Wild card berths CIF SS

by FEman » Tue May 17, 2011 9:12 am

I have a question on how they decide the wildcard berths if two teams are tied in league with the same record and split the there games in head to head. Is it a coin flip or overall record? As you can see my DD team didnt get in and the coach doesnt know how it was decided.
Thanks

I was told:
There are 3 or 4 berths that get to go to the CIF playoffs per division depending on how many teams are in your division. If the 3rd or fourth team are tied then they go with the team with the best second half record. If that does not cover, then a coin flip would be next. We had a three way tie for second and they gave #2 with the best second half record and we flipped for third and fourth place. We lost the flip even though we beat the # 3 team 6-1 the same day. We are # 4 seed wildcard now.
Go figure.

We were the 4th place team in our division and were told that we got in due to our overall record being over .500.

I would assume if you were tied with the other team, it then fell down to your overall record and the other teams was better.

CIF SS issues guidelines in the "Softball / Playoff Bulletin", but each league has its own rules for tiebreakers. Check with your league office, or school AD.

Odd that your coach wouldn't know why you're not in the playoffs! Wtf if up with that?
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

There are really 2 different issues here. First is the tie-breaking procedure for league standings which other posters have covered.

The second is getting an At Large berth. As Sftbll4ever posted, teams are required to have an overall record of .500 or better. The other requirement is the coach/school has to apply for the berth. CIF-SS awards At Large berths from the schools that applied.

The team that received the Wildcard had an overall record over .500 and was able to put in for a wildcard spot. The CIF voted and awarded them one. Our team was under .500 and couldn’t put in for one. Bummer oh well bring on travelball.:-)

Thanks for all your help.

This is why some teams will play really weak teams and tournaments in preseason. That way, if they have a chance, they will be over .500.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always workout that way!!! :D

Aint that the truth!
Sftbll4ever's kid's team not only played a tough non league schedule, but also did well in a strong league.
They deserve the berth, and could surprise some teams.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

CIF needs to use an RPI to ward berths, and for seeding.
